Tend to agree with you. Some folks like all in one for the convenience, cost and compactness. It’s a similar line of thinking to do I have a single provider for data and voice or do I have multiple/separate providers.

All in one (boxes) won’t be ideal for *all* homes and small businesses, as ideal WiFi placement (and/or DECT base placement) isn’t always necessarily where the broadband connection is available. Sometimes discreet, separate units are better (irregular shaped / layout homes / thick stone walls / etc). Sometime several units are needed for better coverage, in which case does it make more sense to have WiFi its own homogeneous and separate solution from the router. Or for that matter WiFi devices supplied/tied to a single service provider. What if I fancy a change…

It’s always horses for courses, but folks may find it hard to comprehend or appreciate the uniqueness of others situations and usage scenarios.

I have devices that have no ethernet port that already have WiFi 7 support; at least one laptop etc. I do have 10GbE ethernet internally. My WAN is only 500 / 50.

Oh yes, i forgot laptop seems to have gone Wi-Fi only these days, I suppose you could stick a USB Ethernet adaptor on it.
I did think at one point about 10Gbit Ethernet, but I have nothing to take advantage of it. My partner has a fibre network, we set up months ago, but she don't have anything to take advantage of the speed. We did it because the cables are easier to get through places.

Apple was first to go WiFi only in the MacBooks released in 2016, yes, 10 years ago.

You can... but its defeats the primary purpose of being portable on battery power. Might as well have a desktop (which i have) if you're going to wire it in. USB 2 and 3 is relatively slow (software overhead) but USB 4.0 or Thunderbolt (both on the C connector) can do full 10 GbE if required.

Yes, I decided to go 10 GbE rather than 2.5 although most desktop kit is supporting 2.5 now. There is an ISP in my road offering 2.3 Gb symmetric for under £50 a month, although not available to me sadly.
