Today's the Day For The FTTC Installation

[link to this post]

Today is the big day for the FTTC installation from 1pm keeping my fingers crossed that they turn up.

Preparations I have made.

Biscuits bought and stored in the tin.

Fresh Coffee/Tea Ready to be brewed and poured.

New Buffalo Router WHR-G300NV2-EU unpacked and ready to go ( Dam that thing is so tiny )

Moved furniture so Engineer can move the faceplate to next to the PC.

Tried to keep my excitement in check Working slightly at the moment smile

Clock watching

Hope it goes ok..

It's so strange I remember when I was waiting for my install nearly a year a go now.. eeek (Time flies) and I was the same. It's almost like being a child again waiting for Christmas.

It wears off of course .. well just becomes the norm I guess smile

It also becomes hard when Im at my parents who have 20Mb connection with Virgin and it just seems so slow. smile

Sounds like you have covered all the bases. Is your main phone socket in the correct location of where you want the router and modem to be? Mine was in the hall way, so I anticipated where my data extension kit should be routed and prepared some trunking or conduit accordingly.

Nope socket is in the hallway, but I am hoping the Engineer will move it to a a spot next to the PC in my lounge. Pointless having the Modem in the hall.

Update BT just called can they come a bit earlier than planned ? About 10:30 Hmm no brainer Yessssss

HA HA

The wait continues.

It seems like only yesterday when I was living in Hamburg, Germany and was a then member of the underground group the CCH Computer Chaos Club.

We were all using 300 BPS modems and then it went up to a blistering 1200 BPS and they cost an arm and a leg back then to chat to each other on our bulletin boards. How far we have come already since those days. Kids would never believe it if I told them that was what we had to use back then and then later for the internet too. How excited were we with the prospect of a 56K Modem ???? OMG

HA HA

HA HA @ first so far, not that I will be speed testing every day Bob!

Loving that dainty little Router works like a charm and so easy to set up all done in about 3 minutes including setting up my Iphone to the Wireless.

Can't wait until midnight now when I can max out my connection with a few HDTV downloads off peak.

I had this problem on my first day of install. From the next day onwards it seemed to run without problem. I enter my phone number only.

Just goes to show you can't trust all the speed testers out there wink

Aside from that well impressed with it so far, just having mega problems with my Outlook 2010 not downloading the email. I know it on my mail server as when I log into the Webmail service it is there but can't get in Outlook even though all the setting are correct. Most infuriating frown

My Infinity is being installed today (EASTF) also sometime between 1pm-6pm. I only have one master-socket currently with an ADSL Nation Filtered faceplate on it and a filtered CAT5e extension to a Sky box. My master and router sit next to 2 power sockets and I ran CAT5e to this location in the hallway so there shouldn't be much work for the Openreach engineer to do smile

Anyone know if the ADSL Nation plate is compatible with VDSL or am I required to have the new BT filtered plate?

My understanding is that the ADSL Nation faceplate with both a filtered output for telephone equipment and an unfiltered output for ADSL has been approved by BT. The thing to bear in mind is that the VDSL modem will require an unfiltered plug-in point, either RJ45 or RJ11.

Yes, the ADSL Nation faceplate is compatible. So in fact is a standard dangly filter! There is no magic.

See this post/thread. The existing XTE-2005 was left in place and the modem was placed at the XTF where the ADSL router had been.

Well I've just had my infinity installed. No idea about my sync speed as the openreach engineer didn't bring his line test device and just wanted to use speedtest.net. So I have no idea as to my line length frown

My ADSL Nation faceplate was left in place after we agreed to "see if it worked" and my HH3.0 is working correctly.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1219714302.png
http://www.pingtest.net/result/37580895.png

BT Speedtester doesn't work yet as I guess my activation is too new so I'll give it a few hours and see if it works.

I've attempted to use my 7800N EWAN router - which is configured to use PPPoE on the EWAN port but it doesn't wish to connect. Tried with both the generic bthomehub@ and using my new @btinternet email address.

System log reports the following -

Jan 01 00:43:50 daemon pppd[468]: PPP: Start to connect ...
Jan 01 00:44:13 daemon pppd[468]: Couldn't get channel number: Transport endpoint is not connected
Jan 01 00:44:13 daemon pppd[468]: PPP: PPP Server No Response !!!
Jan 01 00:44:13 daemon pppd[468]: Doing disconnect

Any ideas chaps? smile

Well after some tweaking, and reboot of the router a few times. It's now successfully established a connection and I no longer need to use the HH smile

As there is no official document to support your understanding, I believe it's a misunderstanding
I wonder how much change you'd have left out of £200 if you reported and VDSL sync issue and the attending engineer found a non-standard faceplate to be the cause of the problem.

indeed, I would have the engineer fit all the standard fittings, if you want to run the nation plate (why though?) then change it around afterwards - at least you get a spare filter plate out of it and can avoid a bill of the nation plate ever went faulty.

What about that ping? Many posters seem to have a 6-12 ms ping when they connect at the higher speeds.

My 5km line can achieve 42ms on a good day. How do you estimate what you should expect relative to the reduced cooper line length or is it just an ISP's chosen settings that dictate?

Thanks.

Copper length isn't really relevant apart from possible noise introduction. More to do with the same factors as before I think - ISP capacity and routing.

I haven't seen many under the 11-12ms I average though.

Thanks for your reply. Thats good to know. smile

So when I order FTTC I suppose I could ask my chosen ISP for an indication of what my line may be able to achieve? I'm only around 300m from my cab so I'm expecting a high profile and sync.

Famous last words perhaps!

300m from cabinet copper run should get 40000 connection and whatever upload you order. Anything up to 500m or so seems to. I walked mine months ago and got around 500m, since when the FTTC cab has been sited about 30m from it, and the engineer test showed (approx) 0.6km, 39992/10000.

IP Profile is the maximum 38717.

Re latency, best to say (in a new thread of your own tongue) which ISP you are considering and see what existing users have to say.
