lol that's nothing it told one of my friends on a 8 meg ADSL connection he was on 74meg lol he was roling round laughing for hours and wishing it was true lol .

Has your IP changed, or has your browser has a moment.

If you don't login it is based on cookie. If your browser looses the cookie, most associations disappear too.

If you've created an account, it should never loose them. Have you emailed Ookla?

No I was not logged in, I will have to start doing that. I do not remember deleting my cookies, but may have done. Or perhaps some of the massive updates my computer has been getting in the last few days did something.

I have emailed them in hope, but it does not matter too much.

Given the speedtest.net methodology, (in a simplistic view) removing the extreme samples and some averaging, I wonder what the peak speed was?

38717 is the IP Profile .

As a side issue, out of interest and doesn't explain the speed test result, I believe the top OR sync on VDSL2 is around 41000-42000. The reported (capped) 40000 is a data rate not a connection speed. Similar to the old days when a 512kbps line sync'ed at 576kbps, 1Mbps at 1152 and 2Mbps at 2272.

The max sync reported by the engineer for me was 46.667 Mbps but the actual sync capped by the modem was 39.996 Mbps. The tech had seen quite a few that had a potential to sync at well over 40 but none had done so

Just been switched to Orange WBC and am now able to run BT Speedtester for 1st time. It reports my:

which doesn't accord with your table. Explain?

I have had a similar experience with some of my recent router syncs.
It all seemed to have started after my exchange was upgraded to WBC.

Following are from recent router re-syncs.

This all started to happen after 11-Apr-11. Before that time I was being allocated
a profile of 7150, even when my sync speed exceeded 8000Mbps.

I was originally going to post this up myself as a separate thread, but seeing
you raised the point.. I will be interested to see whta the explanation might be.

Could this be a software upgrade at the exchange or an issue with speedtester ?

Soemwhere within the WBC system there is a total screwup re the IP Profile that gets reported to the speed tester. A while ago we were seeing many, then for a few months it seemed to be cured. I've seen two or three bad ones again in the last couple of days.

The IP Profile can be higher than the connection speed, the download speed can be higher still, etc., etc.

Hopeless .

In my case, all these figures are consistent:

For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4000-21000 Kbps.

Just that the IP Profile is not a multiple of 1000 Kbps.

Ah, right... I don't think those values are valid for FTTC anyway, from the profiles I've had it seems to be able to use much smaller increments than any form of ADSL.

But I'm prepared to be corrected on that

My table is correct for BT Wholesale profiles, i.e. ADSL Max, IPSC and BT Wholesale ADSL2/2+. XRaySpex is on WBC ADSL2+.

The profiling system on FTTC is Openreach and totally different. You are probably the person with the widest range of figures available, , but unfortunately we have no sync figures to correspond to anything.

Interesting as to what is going on with your line though. Something pretty dramatic, and highly variable sync speeds to give those results.

I forget the history before FTTC. IIRC it always was unstable?

They're not! I was talking about WBC not FTTC, as I warned in my aside.

It did tend to wag around a bit, but most of it cleared up when I lost the copper between the cab and the exchange, so probably a noise source somewhere along the way. The line (probably) passed through/near a small industrial estate

FTTC started last August (only 2 other users in the cab), full speed up to early December then I got hit by the dreaded Xmas lights, and dropped to ~33500. Back up to nearly full speed again mid-January, that lasted about 2 weeks then back to mid-33's.

From then on I was geting 2-5 resyncs a week, but always around the same speed. Then about a week ago I had to have a BT engineer out... it was a cab fault, but while he was here he replaced a couple of ageing crimp connections that he didn't like the look of, and I promptly gained about 2Mbps of profile and it hasn't dropped since . Currently 35447Kbps.

Never had any indications of line problems though- quiet line test was fine etc. Just goes to show you need to look after all aspects of the line if you want good speeds!

The speeds I'm getting now are compatible with increased take-up, there's 20 or more users in the cab now.

No, the top sync you see is 40000Kbps. You can see higher sync rates, but this is on an unconfigured port.
