FTTC router

[link to this post]

well..... After having FTTC installed today, I've discovered that I've made a bum choice in routers, it cant handle the speed. IPV6 would kinda be nice for the future, what would people recommend.

Depends on what else you want/need the router to do.

The draytek 2920 will do everything you have mentioned before, but not ipv6

My Netgear WNDR3700 handles the speed and supports IPV6

its only a cheap a TP-link TL-WR841N. I've used TP-link stuff loads and never had speed issues before. I didn't want to buy something expensive in case I got rubbish sync speeds. on a 1Km line, i really didn't expect 30Mb/s

You could try downloading firmware for that router from www.dd-wrt.com , appears to have ipv6 support.

The speed may not be great, but you can play with ipv6 as much as you want.

Are you either of the reviewers here?

Spec is great, but I'd be unsure.

Do you want/need wireless?

I bought the Netgear FVS318G (which I've discovered only has a maximum LAN to WAN speed of 25MB) because I wanted to create a DMZ and didn't wwant the added expense of wireless on top. I also needed the VPN functionality as well.

Does anyone know of any other non wireless routers that would do the job and have full Gigabit port speeds on the LAN side?

With the ubiquity of domestic wireless routers with gigabit LAN ports these days it would probably be cheaper to buy one that did what you want and simply turn the wireless off.

What you're looking for would probably be considered a niche market, and hence expensive!

Well I am using Billion 7800N via EWAN and it is IPv6 ready and supports Gigabit LAN, so far so good.

I've now bought the RVS4000, up and running....

To start with I was only getting 22Mbps download speeds, but after a bit of trawling round the net, discovered that the IPS (intrussion detection system) that Cisco impliments absolutely happers the CPU. With that turned off I get over 38Mbps now and 8Mbps up.

I also managed to get the VPN working, talking to a Netgear FVS338 in the office. Had a few teething problems and had to work out a combination that both were happy with, but now have VPN tunnels in place as well.

So now I know these do what I want, I've ordered the WRVS4400N so that I can create my DMZ and retire my old modem, router and wireless access point all in one go.

You could use the WRVS4400N on its own if you just wanted a wireless router with VPN (or even without VPN).

These things come with tons of configuration options, and some VPN configuration software to help out as well. Very nice bits of kit.

I'm a happy bunny.
