ADSL24

[link to this post]

Ok, so not that much closer to getting FTTC but I'm spending more time than I should be looking at the ISP alternatives to BT. I can't seem to find much about ADSL24 any any forums but there product appears good and they have been very quick responding to my enquiries which impressed.

I'm not hugely into P2P, using newsgroups more often than not, so a 30gb product for £28 with a static IP and the ability to change package without resetting my contract if I find I'm hitting the download ceiling regularly seems pretty attractive. The lack of a included router doesn't bother as I've a Time Capsule, sitting attached to a Netgear 834 in bridge mode, ready to go & the activation fee appears likely to be across the board by the time I'm ready to activate.

What are peoples' experiences of this product to date?

I have been with them since April of this year on the Fibre 30 Pro and can only say excellent things about them so far. It also depends on your use and requirements of course. For me they have been great, very hands on, knowledgeable and quick to respond to any problems you have. The boss is also very hands on and keen to help.

If you are after a good ISP and with truly unlimited usage at weekends and after midnight until 8am then you can't go wrong with them. Also I think a 1GB allowance a day is is great and if you need to download a lot of stuff the weekends are the time to do it. Speed is consistent always, never had any slow downs even at peak times. You also get a little bit of web space I think 200 MB not a lot but ok for the average Mr Joe Public and of course the static IP.

My rating 10/10

I have had a ADSL service since January with them and all I can say is faultless. No dropouts no nothing. Steady speed. As result of this and more than helpful James I will be ordering The 30 Pro fibre this week when the stats are updated on the checker!

Only £2 a month more than BT and no throttling unless of course you are intending to hoover up the internet smile

Well they let me down big time after weeks of testing them out, caused all manner of problems, thats why i am not with them. Decided to go with another isp where they value their customers 40Gb day, unlimited off peak £22.12 p/m.

There used to be a very active forum but that was halted and a new one replaced it after the bad press a couple of years ago, no one goes on.

Quite simply poor frontline customer service, I'd rather pay a few pounds more for a service where any problem is individually owned from the outset. BT also appear a victim of their own product, too many customers and too little infrastructure to support them, and although the majority of what you hear on forums sheds a negative light on any company there appears an overwhelming amount of evidence to backup my decision. I can live with a 12month contract if it doesn't work out too well and re-evaluate then with a possibility of trying BT but anything at the moment is an improvement on the 0.75mb I'm ringing out of my phone line.

Thanks for peoples' feedback, keep it coming

That is your choice. As you say with any company you get good news and (more often) bad news.

If BT or BT group isn't your thing, the next most popular choices are AAISP, Aquiss and IDNet

Here we all go again....

I'm going with Aquiss when my cab goes live, because I really like the fact that one of the main support guys replied to my lengthy email within 2 hours with clear and concise answers to my queries. Their forum appears to be a supportive and positive place. There are people on here and on other forums have have given the thumbs up for various packages, including the Business 45 package that I'm interested in. ADSL24 also caught my eye, but I'm a little put off by the fact that their forum is now "dead", and there are a few negative reviews of their older LLU products floating about the internet.

And why am I not considering BT? I have always preferred smaller niche ISPs who make your service their responsibility. BT don't have this personal touch, although I must compliment their forum staff for going above and beyond the call of duty (when compared to other sections of BT support). I have a friend that has been using Infinity since March, and he is an extremely similar internet user. We both download games via Steam/Xbox, we both play and host online games, and we both like to occasionally broadcast ourselves playing games on video streaming websites. Overall his experience has been positive, but he finds that after streaming himself playing games for a few weeks, his bandwidth mysteriously seems to get whittled away; making every other application starve for bandwidth. And he has also noted that his connection fluctuates to around 1/3rd it's sync at peak times on occasion.

I suppose at the end of the day it's all personal preference. BT Infinity appears to be a robust product for many users, while others seem a little less satisfied with aspects of the service being provided. For an extra few pounds per month, I think it's fair to trade up to a ISP that covers all bases, while providing a similarly robust service. The usage cap doesn't bother me, because I'm rarely about to use it! And weekdays 8pm-8am and weekends sounds perfect, because it's when I'm most active.

My reasoning is simple.....

18 month contract (24 of you take BT vision) vs. 12 month contract.

If BT's product is so good why do they need to force you to stay for an additional 6 months?
If BT's product actually turns out to be unlimited (not "unlimited" providing you don't exceed a limit), not throttled to death and no port blocking I'd stay because I wanted to, not because I'm forced to.

Just look at the BE example. I'm on a 3 month rolling notice period and I've stayed for three years, simply because the product is that good.
With most previous ISPs the product has been so bad I've jumped ship as soon as the contract period ran out.

But it's pretty much one of the cheapest on the market (so nobody's likely to leave unless the service is rubbish).
If the product is non-rubbish then people will stay and they'll recoup their money anyway.
In fact, if they had a shorter contract period, maybe more people would sign up the in the first place?

The market will change. You'll find that when self-install does come around, many of those BT customers may still be in contract and there could be far better deals to be had but for them, they can either buy out the rest of the contract or patiently wait.

When self install does come around, I would expect the players who are mass market will still be mass market. The small players will still be small and continue to be losing market share.

Just ordered Fibre 30 Pro with ADSL24 tonight. Order was done in no time with the assistance of James and an installation date at the start of August. Cant wait. I'm not being quoted huge speeds but anything better than 1 meg what I get now is better.

Hopefully he will phone when he is at the cabinet switching over so I will ask him then the line length.

I have a DLink DIR615 to try and also an ex Virgin Linksy. If both of those are poor I will go down the netgear route of a wnr2000 me thinks. I'm not out to spend more than £50 on a router as over the years I have spent loads and the best router for ADSL I found was a £10 ebay BT 2700 smile

Did you know they do a fibre version of the 2700 ? In fact the latest versions do both DSL and VDSL.

What will please the engineer most, will be easy clear access to the NTE, and the required spare power supply all ready and waiting.

If you to ask for a D-side measurement, as soon as they get off the phone, unplug your current DSL kit as it can make taking a measurement a little trickier at times. Hover over the engineers shoulder when they run the test with the JDSU/Exfo, and ask to make a note of the stats at that point. It might be noted that the modem will usually produce a slightly hgher sync rate than the test kit.

Ask if the engineer is fitting one of the new updated modems, and ask that they wall mount it.

Good luck.

Just an update. Engineer got to the cab and phoned me. Unfortunately an hour later he phoned back and told me there was a problem connecting me due to wiring in poor condition. To say that I was gutted was an understatement!

I spoke with James at ADSL24 who has kept me up to date with info and the problem maybe due to the line length as well. They may have to place a concentrator or jumper on the line. Engineers are going to the exchange on Thursday to sort this end out and then an engineer will be booked hopefully soon afterwards. James has been swift with any concerns that I have had in answering them and has treated me with a personal touch unlike what you would receive with some of the larger ISP's (My opinion only).

I am intriged by a 2700 that supports VDSL. I would be interested in finding one as any googling done only returns using it as a bridge. Any help on this one?

keep you updated as and when things progress.

I don't think the new 2700 has a built in VDSL modem so its got an ADSL modem built in, plus an ethernet WAN port, to connect your Openreach modem to. So basically it's no different to any wireless router for VDSL purposes!

On thinking about it as you still need to have the bto modem connected the 2700 will not act the same way as it does with ADSL on a long line so it probably would not benefit me

I thought you were suggesting that BT had 2wire with VDSL front end!

However, there are two of them, the 3800HGV and i3802V that supposedly supports VDSL - I wonder if I can get hold of one of those on my next trip to Southern California?

Zarjaz's reply had me intrigued too ...

Got to the bottom of it and even though the Pace site also says Fibre (VDSL) what it means is that there is a WAN input that would be fed from a Fibre/VDSL modem.

Hi folks,

Finally got connected. It took a huge push from ADSL24 (James) to get BT into connecting me today and thankyou smile

Unfortunately the engineer was unable to give me distance on the D side but by road it is 1.3 miles by his sat nav and not 1.1 as I had measured it. He was very surprised I got connected at all by the time he had driven down the road to my house! The BTO modem is a newer one however he tells me there are newer ones again that he has ordered.

I have connected according to the BT Speedtester at 16Mb down and 1Mb up. At the minute because it was a sub 15Mb order the upload is stuck on a 2Mb profile until that is changed. This is so fast compared to my previous1Mb line its fantastic. Ping is around 36ms using the Manchester server via Speedtest.net.

Again a big thankyou to ADSL24 who have been on the ball from last year when I raised questions regarding the fibre. Their support is outstanding and local ie no foreign call centres which I like many others despise.

One very happy surfer smile
