FTTC in my village

Hi


BT have finally installed FTTC in my village after a huge campaign on facebook and dozens of emails to BT to get this installed...Good news so i thought....the boxes have now been installed and 95% of the village now has 40 down 10 up!!!! woooo but i cannot get it, i got a response saying that it would not be able to install fttc to my house as it is direct to exchange!!! [censored]????? what can be done? i have emailed BT back more than 5 times to get them to respond and they are ignoring me.... what can be done???

I've just heard back from BT Wholesale this morning, and this is what they have to say:

"Line characteristics is showing the correct results, as there is no PCP (primary Connection Point) in the routing of line 0191377**** i.e. the Cable from exchange goes directly to the Distribution Point, not via a cabinet."

So, as mentioned, the line to your premises is an exchange only line and doesn't go through a cabinet, therefore I'm afraid you won't be able to receive FTTC at all at your current premises.

The wiring standards - ANFP - are the thing that prevents FTTC running from the exchange building - it disallows the higher VDSL frequencies. BT alone cannot change this - it will need you to pursue this with NICC and Ofcom, but I wouldn't hold out much hope - but it might get you a better explanation of *why*.

Are you close to the exchange? Directly-wired lines are usually close. And if so... you should get a decent speed on ADSL2+.

Another solution would be to ask if BT can install a new line - that isn't directly wired - so you can get FTTC on it.

As it says, there is no cabinet for your line/address so you will not be able to receive FTTC services.

sounds like i am screwed really!!!!! i just cant beleive it...... i am about 300m to the next new green BT cabinet!!!!! my neighbour( about 100m away has FTTC) and i cant get it!!!

This is one of the big problems with FTTC.

Exchange lines "E0 lines" will not get FTTC also conservation areas often town centres (even new builds in town centres) will not see FTTC.

The good news is that places that can't get FTTC might one day get FTTH. Although "might" being the key word, could be 5 years, 20 years or more.

Do you get less than 2Mbps currently? If so something might be done in the next 3 years assuming you're not the only property with an E0 line.

If you get more than 15Mbps you'll probably be ignored for the next 3-5 years.

You look to be getting a solid 6 meg. This means that I doubt there'll be any changes made - if your line couldn't muster 2mbit then you might have been in with a chance.

If you could try to find your router stats then we could give you a good idea what speed you would get on ADSL2+. Almost certainly much better than you have now.

You can get (subject to them not being sold out there) ADSL2+ from Be, (good); O2, (OK for browsing, email, shopping etc but not good for P2P), TalkTalk, (not good for P2P), and some TalkTalk Business resellers who may be better to deal with than TT direct and at least one can do SMPF and get away from TT P2P throttling - at a price.

You may or may not have noticed quite a few people have said that on high ADSL2+ speeds they wouldn't yet move to FTTC. You may be fast enough to be in the same category.

So although you can't get FTTC, you could have a lot faster than at the moment.

I am also on the necox exchange and hope to be connected via FTTC next Monday.

As you have a neighbour connected to the cabinet and it is only 300m away, why not ask for a second line connected to the cabinet. (mine is at least 400m away).

Once the second line is up and working then you can hand in notice for the ditching of the original.

No I live in a different Village - Up hill. However a second line to the cabinet might solve the problem.

Yes there was a connection fee. 40+VAT I think.

I have been told that it may cost thousands???? but the cainet is 200 yards from the FTTC cabinet and the cables run past each other up the front street, the cable ducts pass each other right outside the FTTC cabinet, so im sure they could do something. I filled an online form out on the openreach website, they say they are going to investigate and let me know within 5 days, that was 7 days ago!!!

Another thought. About a year ago my connections with 2 different ISPs began to slow down. There were many investigations and fault reports over a period of three months. It ended up with something called the "Advanced Fault Team" at BT, who finally said they could do nothing as the problem was congestion on the necox exchange.

Luckily Cable and wireless fitted their equipment in the exchange about then, so Vivaciti on of my ISPs converted their connection to one through I think a company called Surfwise who used the LLU equipment rather than the BT stuff.

My download speed immediately went from about 1.4-1.8 up to 3.4 and upload speeds improved as well. Also because it was LLU I no longer had to suffer hits to my profile due to the frequent disconnections as according to Vivacity they do their profiles in a different way.

I see from Sam knows that Nexoc now has a 2nd LLU company. The advantage with the Vivacity connection was the one month notice contract.

If you get no change from switching to a cabinet, then maybe going LLU may improve things a bit.

It's no doubt a dumb question... why can't the guts from a fibre street cabinet be installed in the exchange?

Well it could, (it already is, in way, thats how normal BB works) but the small numbers of premises served by these EO set ups is very small in relation to the set up cost.

So why would they install my estate direct to the exchange????? because they had no space??? dunno... at the time before the FTTC install i could get a fantastic speed for the area 7Mb but now compared to the new 40/10 service im at the bottom!!!

So its 3 weeks now after i posted a request to BT to come and survey for switching me to an fttc cabinet, i got a reply saying we will be in touch after 5 working days and still nothing. I have resent the request even replied to their email and still no reply...... [censored] do i do now???

How many is "very small"? I live on a development in central London situated between The Oval and Camberwell Green with 80 odd dwellings. All lines on the development are EO lines to the Vauhall (WRVAUX) exchange 2+ km away. I realise that 80 isn't that many but it is a significant cluster and I would expect there to be other EO lines on the exchange. Overall I would expect EO lines to make up at least 1-2% of the lines on the WRVAUX exchange

What is becoming increasingly frustrating is that all the surrounding PCPs have been FTTC enabled for some time.

Openreach say about 11% of all lines are EO, which are likely to be heavily weighted towards large business/office premises in city centres.
In central London (the City/West End , not Sarth London ) it could well be more than 50% of lines on an exchange.
Residential EO lines seem to be in smallish clusters except for large blocks of flats/MDU's

Thanks. So not what I would call a "very small number" even if for some exchanges this is heavily weighted towards business premises.

After contacting BT again ti finall got through to someone who knew a thing or two and he said that i could pay for an external extention that would cost me £205 to have done. i called back as they said someone would contact me i 7 working days and nobody did and no one knew what i was talikng about and it could not be done??????? what the hell!!!!!! can some one help plz as this is going round and round... i need to sort my broadband as i am out of contract and need to fix doown a good deal. is there anybody that works for BT/openreach that could help with this.

For all future calls, ask for a name and a reference number, so that queries etc can be traced. Of course BT may not offer a system like this, I do not know.

I hesitate to say it but it is working great here (Kell--). I am just beginning to explore waht the greater speeds offer.

Hi i just give up with BT and went to 02, they giving me unlimited for £12.50 which is free for 6 months and line rental for £7.50!!!

After all the messing i got connected and now i have 12Mb down load and 1Mb upload!!!!!!! twice as fast as BT and it on the same exchange.......and at a third of the cost!!
