BT business Infinity installed - printers not working

[link to this post]

Hi Have 2 printers that i used wirelessly on my bt business broadband. Since I upgraded to infinity on 22nd December I cannot get either printer to print wireless. I got "add printer" and select the wireless option but the desktop and laptop cannot find my printers when they search for them.

Help on this would be massive as i'm back to work tomorrow.

thanks

What printer? Have you run through the setup process to link the printer to the BT hub 1st?

If you've upgraded to infinity , you got a new hub. The wireless printers will still be set-up for your previous hub.
You'll likely need to go through the setup procedure for the printers themselves all over again and get them to sync with the new hub 1st, before you can add them to your computers.

Shall I delete the printers I currently got on my desktop and laptop?

How do I sync them with the new hub? I got a silver bt business router with another seperate white unit (think its a modem)

First thing you need to do is note the SSID of the hub and the passphrase that is used for the wireless connection. The printers won't be able to connect to the wireless netwrok unless they know these bits of info.

Your printers should have user guides describing how to do the wireless configurations.
If you don't have them, look them up on the relevant manufacturer websites. Should be pretty straight forward to find.
They should be configurable via wireless or via USB for wireless operation.

If you are not confident of moving the printers to the new hub, you can hang the old hub off the new one (with a minor change) and use the printers through that until you are ready to move them.

Also, I'm currently downloading the driver software from the manufacturers website. Download speed is 90KB/sec

is this speed correct/okay?

That is not "normal" ... but it may be that BT policy has recently changed.

Download at 90KB ~ 720kbps could be OK. Many hardware vendors seem to throttle their servers providing driver updates - I have often seen downloads of that sort running at 500kb/1Mb so don't read anything into it.

I've installed the drivers etc and have set up one of the wireless printers (hp p1102w) to my laptop. I am glad to report this is now printing successfully. I then set up wirless for the hp printer on my desktop. I didn't download any new drivers etc as it found the printer on my network (guessing thats because I already set it up on my laptop).

Now here's the problem. Desktop is printing wireless but it prints the same page over and over again and won't stop unless I cancel the print. The document just seems to stay in the printing queue. This is not happening with the laptop so does anyone know what I can do to rectify this?

I've checked the printers preferences and this is set to print "1 copy"

This is something for you to check on the manufacturers support forums rather than here... only hope is if someone has the same spec printer and has had the same problem.

I would update the drivers on the desktop machine, just in case. Don't forget you are dealing with a print server in the hub, and maybe there is some incompatability with the existing drivers.

As the old drivers were already on the laptop and it didn't work, that suggests this could be the case.

thanks for the info. I'm now downloading the new drivers. Once this has finished will I need to delete the printer from my list or printers and go through the set up again? Or can or will the new updated drivers automatically be applied to my current setup?

I assume you will be updating the drivers for the installed printer, and would expect/hope that works. If it doesn't, then yes, delete the printer on the desktop machine, re-install, and when it asks about drivers choose choose the option Have disk or similar, rather than letting Windows install its own. Then browse to the ones you have downloaded.

thanks everybody - I had the same problem the printer was connected to the hub by a cable but my macbook which connects wirelessly kept showing the message 'Network host '192.168.1.67' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds... '
- so I deleted the printer and re-selected it - sorted!
