Replacement Openreach Modem - Still able to view line stats

[link to this post]

I had my OR Huawei modem replaced last week as the previous one had failed, no power, lights etc. I had flashed the replacement firmware that allowed access to line stats etc on the modem that was taken away.

Out of curiosity, I tried to log into the new modem (192.168.1.1, admin:admin) as I would have previously done and low and behold it worked, giving me the same access as I used to have.

Have OR started shipping unlocked modems?

Was the replacement brand new in box?

Could be a returned / reconditioned unit that has been hacked by the original user?

Ex <n>ildram , been to SKY MAX - 15,225 Download
BE Unlimited - 21,000 Download 1,200 Upload ON THE LINE THAT SKY COULD ONLY PROVIDE 15,255 DOWN AND 800 UP ON!!!,
Moved house, now BE Unlimited 6,500 Down, 1Mb/s up - gutted!
FTTC Cab installation commenced 12th April - expect full 80 / 20 - bye bye BE, hello BT Infinity soon!

Seems likely.

Or it may be one the engineer had removed from a Cease.

Have to see if there's a trend, but that means we need to ask anyone who posts that they've just been connected. As it won't be something 90% would report on.

It appeared to be as I seen the engineer take it and the new PSU out of the box.

ERR, that's an OLD (original) modem by the looks of it. They should not have given you that, but one labelled 3B.

Will just have to see how long this one lasts then!! I didn't realise that the OR Modem was recovered as part of a cease and you would have thought that the old unreliable modems would have been scrapped rather than be recycled.

I'm wondering if having the MAC address of the modem publicly available is OK? Dunno, just asking.

Well it's achieved its purpose here anyway, as we have established it an early one. Easiest to delete the complete post while you can smile.

The box it comes in will have a large 3B on the labels at either end.

Openreach been and gone, what a top bloke too.

I have the 3B up and running, the engineer is requesting a full reset (Forget the term he used) which should begin to take place in the next hour or so.

To the OP, the PSU with this new 3B is white (and also much beefier) where as my original one was black if that helps at all.

The replacement PSU I received was also white.

I'm sure all the replacement PSUs are white, the issue always was that many OR engineers did not replace the PSU when replacing the modem, or did not have the new PSUs anyway.

Is it likely to be problematic? It's rated at 12v 0.7 amps

I don't believe so - the white ones are rated 1A but there have been repeated assurances that the black ones are adequate.

Look on the back of the 3B modem. What does the manufacturer's label say that it, the modem, requires?

There was a lot of duff information being propagated, even by the BT Group themselves, some months ago. The "Kelly Cowboys", who had been contracted to swap out all the earlier versions of the modems, failed to swap the PSUs at the same time. Someone within the BT Group decided to start a campaign of misinformation to cover up that blunder.

It says: Power Rating 12v 1 Amp.

Perhaps I'll find a suitable 12v 1amp transformer at some point, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks, so the black one should be just about up to the job, but the white (1amp) version would be better.
