I've used the fttc postcode checker to work out when I can expect FTTC for my phone number and that site indicates that some homes have FTTC but not mine. The information says that my local cabinet is P33 and roughly locates it on the map (the yellow pin) so I've used Google Streetview and located what I think is cabinet P33
I've looked at some images of BT cabinets on Google and it looks like that Streetview image is my local cabinet, but the question is, when FTTC becomes available for my phone number, will that cabinet be replaced with a new larger one or will the new larger one sit near it?
Just wondering what to keep an eye out for...

The FTTC cabinet usually is located near, in your case probably close on that bit of grass.

Obviously it's just a question of timing and I've been lucky. Let's hope the installation is smooth and that the FTTC upgrade yields the stated 60Mb DL/20Mb UL speeds

I have never synced at less than 20 up, my downstream sync varies from mid 60s to low 70s (estimate 58.1).

Sorry, I didn't intend to, just pointing out that at a downstream sync of 60+, full 20Mbps upstream sync was likely.

Also, is the cable that comes from the VSDL faceplate and connects to the VDSL modem the same type of cable that's used to connect from an ADSL faceplate an ADSL router/modem?

If you plant to move the modem (or to get the OR installer to place it further away) you should get a "home wiring solution" which is an extension cable.
It is free but needs to be ordered by the ISP from OR. Some ISPs do this automatically.

I've got an RJ11 -> RJ45 cable that I made to connect from the ADSL faceplate to a neighbouring network socket, which ends up at a patch panel. In another room a similar cable connects from a network socket to my router, then at the patch panel end I've connected both network sockets together. Works well so I'm hoping I can locate the VDSL modem somewhere out of the way using the same technique.

This is even more likely to negatively affect your sync rate than on ADSL.
You should site the Openreach VDSL modem at the master socket and use your technique to connect the Ethernet WAN port of the VDSL modem to the Ethernet WAN port of your chosen router

Sound advice which I'll heed. I do have cat5e wiring around the house but I'll wait until things have settled down until moving the VDSL modem. I'll also look at getting a fire alarm in the garage where the network patch panel is located, as I've heard the modem gets very hot.

The only powered piece of kit in the garage is a network switch so if I'm going to add a VSDL modem, I think a smoke or heat alarm will be a good idea

Well I now have FTTC though I haven't been able to get it working with my Billion Bipac 7800N router so just using the Plusnet supplied Technicolor router which just worked. I did a speedtest from a laptop over wi-fi and got around 30Mb/s download and 8Mb/s upload which I was fairly okay with, esp. the upload speed which'll make a huge difference to my use of the web/cloud now.
But then I tried the same test over a wired network and got this result
The lappie has 802.11g wi-fi so that's now a bottleneck, albeir one I'm sure I can live with until the laptop gets replaced with a whizzy 802.11n wi-fi model.

Nice result, strange how the upload suffers as well via the wireless link, can understand the download being restricted by the wireless, but surely the upload should still be able to achieve around 17 meg via wireless?

Running Speedtest app on my iPhone whilst stood next to the wireless-n router I get 28Mb/s dl and 18Mb/s upload. As you can see below, the ThinkBroadband speed test over wired ethernet is less optimistic than Speedtest.net

There's been some sort of problem with the upload test on Thinkbroadband for a long time, every body seems to end up with the wrong upload speed, been many a thread on these forums about it.

The flash upload can cope with well in excess of the FTTC/P speeds from open reach.
Java appears to have been nobbled by all its updates of late, and influences of AV suites.

Well I've allowed it all to settle down and relocated the VSDL modem as described above and it all works perfectly, no reduction in sync speed or performance and one happy missus who couldn't bear te sight of a cream box with green flashing LEDs in the hallway
