I've got an RJ11 -> RJ45 cable that I made to connect from the ADSL faceplate to a neighbouring network socket, which ends up at a patch panel. In another room a similar cable connects from a network socket to my router, then at the patch panel end I've connected both network sockets together. Works well so I'm hoping I can locate the VDSL modem somewhere out of the way using the same technique.
This is even more likely to negatively affect your sync rate than on ADSL.
You should site the Openreach VDSL modem at the master socket and use your technique to connect the Ethernet WAN port of the VDSL modem to the Ethernet WAN port of your chosen router 
I did wonder about that although there's no noticeable impact with my ADSL router. I'll try it first when the new facrplate is installed and if the sync rate isn't acceptable, then do as you suggest and site the OT modem next to to master socket.
My wife has a pathalogical hatred of electrical cables and boxes so I'm trying to avoid having the OR modem anywhere where it's visible

He will probably want to wall mount it as well, but that isn't compulsory. So you need to make sure he doesn't.
It is a bad idea to do anything with the modem till the end of the day after the day of installation. The DLM at the cabinet is especially sensitive during that period and you might cause it to apply a (low) "banding" profile. That requires a further engineer visit to clear.

Sound advice which I'll heed. I do have cat5e wiring around the house but I'll wait until things have settled down until moving the VDSL modem. I'll also look at getting a fire alarm in the garage where the network patch panel is located, as I've heard the modem gets very hot.

The only powered piece of kit in the garage is a network switch so if I'm going to add a VSDL modem, I think a smoke or heat alarm will be a good idea

Make sure heat alarm is not triggered by parking a car with a very hot engine in it.

It is many years since I used a garage for this ................

Well I now have FTTC though I haven't been able to get it working with my Billion Bipac 7800N router so just using the Plusnet supplied Technicolor router which just worked. I did a speedtest from a laptop over wi-fi and got around 30Mb/s download and 8Mb/s upload which I was fairly okay with, esp. the upload speed which'll make a huge difference to my use of the web/cloud now.
But then I tried the same test over a wired network and got this result
The lappie has 802.11g wi-fi so that's now a bottleneck, albeir one I'm sure I can live with until the laptop gets replaced with a whizzy 802.11n wi-fi model.
