hh3 dropping wifi

got problems with my hh3. It keeps dropping wifi on my laptop, everything was fine on my old router (dsl speedtouch). I got a asus rt-n66u however I didn't get the same speeds on my pc as with the hh3. So I'm back to the hh3. I was thinking of sticking with the hh3 and get a AP to sort out the wifi issues. I can't find a single AP with decent reviews. Which AP would you guys recommend that would have decent reliable signal? only need it on 2.4GHz but don't mind 5Ghz either.

Is it an HH3A or HH3B?
Some people find it helps to fix the channel rather than using the HomeHub auto channel selection.
Have you checked that you have the latest wireless drivers for the laptop?

You can disable DHCP on the Asus, give it a fixed IP address on the Home Hub's subnet, outside the range that allocates, connect the two by ethernet and use the Asus wireless. In other words turn it into a WAP plus ethernet switch.

Turn off the HH wireless if you wish. The usual thing is to get the two routers well separated, to give wider coverage, as most would do with a WAP.

it's HH3A. I have selected a static channel and all drivers on the laptop are up to date.

thanks. £100 for an AP is a bit too much tbh also just found out my hh3 has all lan ports (except the gigabit) limited to 10mb/s ;/

yeah ;/ apparently they should be 100mb/s but on my hh3 are only 10mb/s

Get it replaced. (Have you tried a factory reset?)

Yup, done that yesterday but it didn't help do I need to call the helpline (and go through all the troubleshooting steps) or can ask for replacement via mybt?

No idea, but maybe the wireless on the replacement will be better as well.

This helped me out no end when I had problems with an unrelated router/device - so it can make all the difference. I think in my case, it was the fault of my phone - after getting really fed up, I eventually trawled through a big PDF of my phone manufacturer's instructions, and luckily picked up on a sentence which said "preferably channel 11" - since I told my D-Link 2640R to do that as opposed to use the auto setting, I've had a perfect wi-fi connection.

There are apps to analyse wi-fi around you which might be "crowding" or... you know, interfering in some obscure way with your link - maybe if the above fails then download one and see where the other strong signals lie around you in the spectrum. Someone will be able to recommend one for your laptop, I've only got one on my Android phone (this one).

The app I use to monitor wireless is inSSIDer; free on PCs. Helpful to choose a good channel, and also to check if small changes to position/orientation of router or device can improve your signal. I think there is a paid for version of inSSIDer on Mac, and also a free one called iStumbler.

How are you proving that ? I have never come across that issue before ?

there's a topic on bt forums about this apparently it was fixed with a fw update but not in my case. Anyway, I replaced a hdd in my laptop, reinstalled windows etc. Plugged the cable in (turned of wifi) and it was downloading stuff at 1mb/s (so 10mb) only. I have then unplugged the cable and turned wifi on, the speed went right up to 5-6mb/s (50-60mb)

edit: also when I stream stuff from my pc to my tv (both connected via cable to the router) and try to fast forward (usually 10 secs per button press) it gets stuck and says preparing to play. Never had this issue with the old router (DSL ) and didn't have this issue with the asus either again using the same cables

I'm beginning to get confused as you are using lower case m and b all the time. As in "it was downloading stuff at 1mb/s (so 10mb)".

I assume all the "m"s (milli) are really M (Mega), but your "b"s I'm sure are varying between "b" (bits) and "B" (Bytes). Seeing as a Byte is 8 bits, and we are discussing speed issues, this becomes rather important.

For instance, if you are seeing 10MB per second out of an ethernet port, that is 80Mbps. Which is fair enough.

Remember that nowadays the actual speed of TP ethernet is a negotiated affair - so it needs both ends to have the capable hardware *and* agree to use, say, 100Mbps full duplex.

Have you checked that the settings on your PC aren't restricting it to 10Mbps?

For a while, my whizzy desktop (Windows 7, with a gigabit port on the motherboard) would auto-negotiate at 10Mbps with the switch (a gigabit Netgear). Quite an annoying drop, and I never got to the bottom of *why*. It just stopped doing it.
