New FTTC install - what should I expect?

Today the nice BT Openreach engineer connected me to Talktalk 'fibre fast' & he showed me the speed at the master socket, exactly 80MBps down & 20Mbps up.

What I am testing as is:

I have tested this on two machines, my setup is I connect LAN4 on the HG533 to an 8port switch Dynamode SW80010-M:

The machines are connected to the switch.

I'm also having problems connecting via WLAN but I'm investigating that, my wireless computer is an 11 year old IBM T41 which connected fine to my previous router, the Talktalk HG523; the T41 runs wireless at 802.11a/b/g only. Slow slow but it should connect...

I'm not complaining, 50MBps down seems like a miracle to me, I started in 1986 with a Hayes modem running 1200/300 baud, heh

BBN stuff, no internet yet then. And now people complain because they're not getting 100% of everything.

There is only the single master socket, which the engineer replaced & added to that the Openreach fibre modem & then CAT5e to the HG533. As I say, he tested it at the socket & got the full shebang 80/20, I am 150 metres from the cabinet.

What should I expect as I leave it turned on for the next 10 days?

Depending on your OS, you might have to tweak the MTU and RWIN settings.

The router should have an MTU of 1492


Did you test with any AV software disabled and ensure nothing else was running?

I can change MTU to manual 1492 easily, should I?
RWIN looks like a registry change, should I change it & what to?
Ping average is between 3mS & 8mS out to UK hosts, I can't remember how to enable incoming pings...

Not sure its RWIN as would see a ramp for the single thread, What is odd is the performance of the multiple threads, what CPU is this machine?

On the wireless, if you only have b/g devices try turning off the n mode on the router.

What did the DSL Reports tweak Test suggest for RWIN?

Hah! Probably the oldest machine on this forum, I bought it in 2003 for £3,500 (with added memory, making a grand total of 1GB) it was the latest thing an IBM T41! The last machine built in USA before IBM sold out to Lenovo; it;s been to Australia 5 times, India 6 or more, from the 40C of Goa to the -5C of Manali winter... built like a tank. On its third fan & shoehorned with 2GB RAM & a 330GB drive, I love it.

But, it's 'Centrino' & darn slow, from CPUID:

what browser are you using, I have seen chrome behave significantly slower then ie on some speed tests

Observations:
Upload packet less than your MTU (FAQ #1492)
Good data stream (no/few rexmits).

On the HG533 there seem to be two MTU setting places.
1. Advanced > Routing > Static Routing
MTU Value is empty.
2. Basic > WAN
MTU Value is AUTO.

Which or both should I change the MTU to? And RWIN since there are no recommendations from Tweaktest...

From the router logs, what does it mean?

Certainly the WAN one should be 1492 and the routing one - try 1492 or maybe less.

You might need to experiment.

MTU set at 1492, maybe a smidgeon better, I'm going to wait a couple of days & see what happens. 55/16 is nae bad Jimmie!

What if you go straight into teh HG533 router and not via the switch?

No window scaling; RWIN only has enough room in the header, 16 bits, to go up to 65535. How exactly is it to ramp?

I ran SG TCP Optimizer & now get 75down/17up!

I simply as you suggested, set the bandwidth & then did 'optimal' on both General & Advanced settings.

After fiddling around all day I made a restore point & ran the program & looked at the results; no idea what changed, too tired to find out, still running 75/17 tho

At very least it would've increased the maximum RWIN and enabled window scaling to make it possible.

Which is where I pointed the OP initially!

My network firewall runs on an old dual 200 MHz Pentium Pro based Compaq Professional Workstation which hails from 1996 and my webserver is a Cobalt RaQ4R which is slightly newer.

I loved the Cobalt equipment, It's a pity they were bought and put out of business by Sun.

Yes, I worked with Sun networks in the late 1980s.

I don't think that machine on eBay is cheap, £465 for this?

Very expensive I thought, I can build a very good spec fast PC using onboard graphics for that, it'll be silent and even have an SSD.

Do those machines have any special features which make them expensive?

I'm sure my brother has all his old computers stashed away, ZX81, Spectrum, BBC Micro, Atari, Apricot Qi.

I still have the Toshiba T2100 that I wrote statistical software on; I was a QC on seismic survey boats & got fed up with doing it all offline; started with a Compaq sewing machine portable (which my ex-wife still has) but then bought the top-of-the-line T2100 in 1990 as it weighed less; it needs a CMOS battery & should crank up DOS3.3 just fine. Made a lot of money on that machine, taught myself C to do it.
