Fibre Installed - ECI Modem

[link to this post]

Id like to get the stats from this modem but its looking like I need to get some kit to unlock it?

All the pages/info I am getting from Google is 1+ year old.

Is there a better way to unlock it or should I just grab a HG Modem from eBay when I can?

Just grab a HG, there are two variants of the ECI modem and while I can talk to it over the serial and see some data I lost patience to figure out which of the many commands online actually worked.

Getting a HG gets my vote as well, using the latest unlocked firmware I actually sync a little higher than the ECI (not that it looks like it will make a difference with your connection as it looks like you will max out)

I think its down to what cab you have. If its an ECI cab you get an ECI modem etc..

I could be wrong though!

In my experience (second-hand from my Dad) when their service is working it works well. The only problems he ever had were with their customer service which was diabolical. Including the infamous time when they accepted new customers on their newly released LLU service without offering it to existing customers first then started charging existing customers extra for staying on BTw.

Hopefully the OP will not need to contact their CS department.

Well i recently moved from TT residential to TT business primarily to get a static ip on fibre but the difference in phone support is breathtaking. They are based in Warrington, pick up the phone in a few rings (ala First Direct) unlike Yorkshire's finest ISP and their technical team actually know what they're talking about. They cost more than the residential arm (though you do get higher network priority at the exchange), i'm paying £48 a month for the 80/20 fibre service + line rental + unlimited landline/mobile calls. Obviously you need to have a business to order their service...cough cough splutter wink

Their online chat support team are also very good as well:

It was probably cheaper because it's the 2B version, which is not a problem, just make sure that it's well ventilated, they used to run a bit toasty. As far as I'm aware the newer firmware is OK on them. The newer models are 3B and have a white transformer.

You should ask TalkTalk to upgrade you to their 110/40 meg service smile

On a serious note why can't the modem sync at the full 80000/20000 kbps instead of 79999/19999 kbps?

Basically by examining the "D:" line in the output from xdslcmd info --stats

"1" is Fast Path in that direction. Any other number shows the degree of interleaving.

On FTTC it isn't quite that simple, as there can be error correction and latency delay parameters set even without interleaving.

Edit - also see this post.

Speeds have been a constant 75mb down and 17-18mb up.

Happy days!

I think it's to do with the way the bits are spread out in the bands, each band can only carry a given amount of bits.

Re: Fibre Installed - ECI Modem

[re: Seansmit17] [link to this post]

Noticed something today.

My attainable rate has been dropping at a steady pace as other ppl jump on the FTTC band wagon.

I was at 109mb to start with and down to 103mb and upload was at 36mb and then down to 32mb at last check 2 days ago.

and today I see this:

Attainable rate (kbit/s) 98788 40912
SNR margin (dB) 11.2 15.2
Line attenuation (dB) 0 0
Output power (dBmV) 13.3 6.7

Download has took a dive down a few mb and the upload has gone up!

What could explain this?

My download/upload connection is still at 80/20 so no issue there.

Gave the modem a reboot and got this.

Attainable rate (kbit/s) 98832 33656
SNR margin (dB) 11.2 15.3
Line attenuation (dB) 0 0
Output power (dBmV) 13.4 6.7

Odd that my upload would jump like that?
