Could a second line give me a better FTTC speed

[link to this post]

Really poor FTTC speeds (around 12-13) even though only approx 700m from Cab. Checker originally said 32, now says 23 -32.

Thinking about getting a second line to see if it improves the speed. If I do get a second one will it mean a second cable from the DP or do they use the existing cable and run two lines on it ? - if so am I likely to achieve anything better than at present ?

Any other thoughts welcome

Thanks

It's unlikely to perform any differently. it'll probably just use another pair from the same cable bundle as your current line.

Can you not report it as a fault as you are getting a lot lower then the predicted speed?

I would agree with this. Even if no fault found and you have to end up paying for the visit, it's still got to be cheaper than paying for 2 services.

Been there - six Engineer visits later Plusnet's best response is to say that's it and you can leave if you want !!

And they haven't billed you for any of these visits?!

Have you checked for virginmedia in your area?

Existing cable has 2 pairs in it and it won't help you in the slightest.

Thread done?

Not necessarily- order two new lines.

Expensive though frown

OP is asking specifically about a second line, going by the thread topic. A leased line or FTTPoD would improve things too. Neither are relevant.

you think is no variance from pair to pair then?

given he is way below his estimate I think is a fair chance a 2nd line be faster, but of course its a gamble that might not pay off.

on the point ignition made I think the 2/4 pair cables are just the dropwire so the pair wouldn't necessarily be next to the existing pair all the way back to the cabinet (I think, definitely not sure).

You might contact 'chilting' who has bonded lines, now FTTC.

Try http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/sendprivate.php?Use... - if thta does not work, PM me and I will talk to him.

I had a second line put in (not related to slow speeds) - but when they came to put it in - they couldn't find the second line.

So, they ended up digging up the road and recabling (I didn't get charged for any of this) and low and behold - both broadband lines jumped in speed.

If you're out of contract, could give this a try?

http://www.aa.net.uk/broadband-trial.html

If they can't fix it... you don't pay anything and you're free to migrate away.

Worked prety well for me.

I have the chance to leave my existing contact without penalty and can get a new line which would cost me around £160 extra, over the next 12 months incl rental and installation.

Up to you, but someone else said the 2nd line might piggyback with the 1st line and may not solve the issue.

No.

Not unless you can guarantee the line takes a different route on a different cable to a different card etc.

A 2nd line is an expensive gamble, and there is no obligation to provide anything above (I believe) 128kbit over xDSL.

I have sites with many lines and they all have the same (poor) xDSL speeds, only bigger sites with EO main cables I can see a difference of 1 or 2mbit sync between the different main cables, but that also takes into account where those cables are on the MDF at the exchange and how long the tie pairs are to the MSAN.

28kbps dialup so far as I know.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 56.6/14.1Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Yes the USO for dial/data is still 28k but I have a vague recollection that *if* BT decide to provision you with xDSL I think the minimum profile of 128k is all the DSLAM/MSAN will allow.

But that does not change the USO in any way

I had two lines, one with Sky and one with BT which was provided by my employer.

The Sky line developed a fault and the sync dropped from 72 Mbps to 49 Mbps which is still unresolved and OR say that that's he best it could ever be. Pre-fault the BT line was syncing at 70 Mbps which jumped to 75 Mbps when the line resynced overnight.

Unfortunately my work line was ceased because my employer said I didn't work from home enough, before the OR engineer came to "not fix the fault" on the Sky line.
