Mysterious cable appeared at bottom of telegraph pole

Could this be a fibre cable? We are currently in a not-spot...

Don't believe that's a fibre cable.

The cable looks rather thick - so in theory it could contain a bundle of fiber cables I suppose.
The silver connector on the end looks rather odd, I've not seen that before in BT's networks.

Well there's no reason it should be thick, there are only 12-odd dwellings downstream from there.

I don't think that is a connector. At first glance it looks more like the sort of valve you get on a tyre or something.

Maybe for pressurising ducting to keep water out?

That's most certainly not cable. It looks like a robust tube. Perhaps it's something fibre could get blown through. Any clue through soil/pavement disturbance where it might run too?

I don't want to get your hopes up (are you in an intervention area), but a bit of research reveals there is something called "direct bury sub-duct", which is just a fancy name for a plastic tube you can bury in the ground for carrying small fibre bundles. I've no idea if BT use such things, but there's some in this brochure from a telecoms ducting supplier available in a range of sizes.

(Using the term "sub-duct" for a single tube buried in the ground is a bit odd as such a thing is surely just a very small duct).

That's not a connector. I think it's a sealing plug in a piece of heavy gauge tubing.

There's no soil disturbance. There's a white tag around the bottom of the mast with a reference number and a date a few days ago.

It's a bit difficult to see how it could get there without any soil disturbance unless it's just pocked into the ground as a marker, but that surely can't be the case. The other end must go somewhere...

Could it be for injecting preservative down to the foot of a pole?


I have noted those on new/replacement phone poles erected over the past 10 years or so.

Sure it hasnt been there for a while? There is a clip on the pole that looks to be broken as if the "cable" or duct had been there for some time and you've not noticed it but recently the clip has been broken making it more obvious?
