Evening,
I want to upgrade to fibre optic because i currently have speeds of 4.4mbps. I can only get FTTC currently has virgin is not available in my area. Question is SKY and BT state on their fibre i will on get from 7- 12mbps. I checked this on DSL checker and states the same. My neighbour however is able to get max 80mbps. They are on the same exchange and cabinet has me what would be causing the difference??
Thanks for help

If you put your number into the checker at https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html
it will tell you what cabinet you are connected to then put in your neighbours number and see if your on the same cabinet as them.

Yes we are both on the same cabinet? Confused why there is such a difference in speed

Had exactly the same problem here.
My neighbour 3 doors away got around 75Mb, I got 25Mb on a good day, usually less, &
using DSL Checker gave basically same speed results before I went live.
We were on same cabinet & drops on same front pole, BTOR couldn't explain it other than poor quailty of cable.
After months of complaining, I got moved to another pole at rear of property & now have around 70Mb.

Thanks Nightglow who did you complain to? I have just found my street cabinet and it is exactly 100 metres away from my front door ? Surely our speeds shouldnt differ so greatly

Slightly different issue, as other poster was talking about actual differences once live.
The checker is not always right and have seen a few like you describe recently, is the cabinet you can see 100 metres displaying the correct cabinet number (only ever shown on the old phone cabinet, rather than new fibre twin)
If the cab has only just gone live, give an extra week and if the records have not updated then email us, will need address and phone number for you, and address of a property getting good estimate and will take up with Openreach. Providers can do the same of course, but most don't understand.

Mrsaffron yes the box states 57 in the top corner, which DSL states we are both on. There is a new green box next to it which has no numbers on. On another note i checked a few neighbours to left of me and they get the same estimated mbps has myself. Yet some across the road also stated on same box get the 80mbps estiamte?
Across the road can be significant, since it is possible for wiring to go 100's of metres down a road before crossing and return along the other side...
Its things like this that has to be looked at before I pass these issues on
If the estimate is wrong it will not limit your speed, so if a provider is willing to place an order that will confirm what is possible on the line.

Also DSL checker does not recognise my telephone number could this be because i have Sky line rental rather then BT?

Mrsaffron i spoke with SKY yesterday and they stated i would only get 7- 12mbps as well i take it that is just their estimate as well? Do you think it may be worth upgrading to fibre and then cancelling should i not get high speeds? Thanks for all your help

They will both be the same estimate from the same source as you!.
The only way of finding out if you can get better is for you or one of the other houses with the lower estimate actually get FTTC.
If you can track the wires back to the cab you may see if the distance is much more for your side of the road than the other side, but it can be hard to find out where they cross the road.
Estimates seem to be for each DP and until a customer on a DP is actually provided the system will not be able to correct it's accuracy. Once the first customer is working the system should 'refresh' to give a better indication of what is actually given. ( It may not improve but can improve significantly).
There are instances where the first customer has conditions within their premises ( e.g bad wiring) that make the first system correction go low, this will then correct again when others work at a better speed.

In other words take the plunge and see what happens lol... I think i will contact sky and try to arrange something whereby if i do not get a good mbps through fibre i can revert back to standard, i shall see what they say lol

Ant
It would be interesting to know the outcome if you do decide to take the plunge. One thing you can be sure of is that your upload speed will increase significantly.
The trouble is Sky will almost certainly keep you to contract if it meets their estimates.
So was on the phone to SKY about to do it.. theres a 14day cancellation period so that would have been fine...then they stated i would have to pay £50 installation so i didnt bother...didnt see the point in paying £50 for something that may not work and then i would cancel
Yes that's because its a Sky LLU number and openreach has no visibility of where it is located

Might just have to bite the bullet and wait till virgin cover my street they cover every other one around me

You have all been helpful so far..so here goes.. i have a brown telewest box connected to front of my house which leads into a white box inside with tv and fm out? Does this mean i should be able to receive fibre from virgin?
Looks likely what does http://www.virginmedia.com say when you do a postcode check and subsequently select an address?

It states that Virgin media is not available for me currently. Yet on the telephone i was told number 71 in my street has it which is 6 doors down from me. I also have an old Telewest brown box connected to my house, which i presume used to have cable, it still comes into my house ?

Sorry forgot i already mentioned the brown telewest box

There are some areas where the network may have shrunk in size, or more likely their records may not be correct.
It may be a case of having to phone Virgin Media to get their checker issue resolved.

Are you aware of any telephone numbers for VM that might be able to sort the issue? Unfortunately when I called there sales team it took me to a call center in India who only offer me what they see on a screen etc?

Can't help with that, but it might be an idea to have a photo of the box on your house to show them if you are given a contact.

Perhaps if you get nowhere on the next try, you could email to the top?
