Hey everyone, i have recently been looking at roadworks.com because the village next to me has recently got fibre optic installed. I have been waiting ages for fibre optic and my current download speed is 1 megabit at the peak. A few days ago i saw this on my village from roadworks.com:
"Install 6m of 2 poly ducts in Footway,Provide, Renew or Recover 2 DSLAM street cabinet and base..." and "Install 4m of 1 way power duct in Footway,Install 8m of 1 way power duct in Carriageway,Performing a..." between 14-16 December.
Hopefully this means that i should be getting fibre optic. Can anyone confirm this? I am also currently on an EO line, will this make a difference?
Many thanks

I think you mean www.roadworks.org
Sounds promising, have you been looking at the local council and BT 'where and when' websites to see if what plans they are publishing?
I believe EO lines are an issue. An FTTC cabinet needs to be installed by/in the exchange to overcome this.
EDIT: I've just found your earlier thread from July - there's a comment there about the possibility of moving your local EO lines to a cabinet that some locals are using.

Yes it does sound like FTTC is being installed but being on a EO line means they need to build a new cabinet outside the exchange, they have done this already in my village even before my cabinet which isn't EO is live so I don't think EO lines get forgotten about like they used too.
I wouldn't get too excited just yet though, I first saw on roadworks.org that a new Fibre cab for my line was being installed in February (8 months ago!) but it only eventually did get fitted about 2-3 weeks ago and still expect it to be after Christmas before it goes live.

Thanks for the reply, well that is a problem. On where and when for my number is says:
"Exchange name: Sinderby
Status: Accepting orders
Superfast Fibre is in your area but we can't tell by your postcode/number if you can get it right now. Please contact your communications provider, who can check using your phone number"
However with other houses in my village it says:
"Exchange name: Sinderby
Status: Enabled area
Your area is enabled for Superfast Fibre but your cabinet is not ready yet so you can't place an order today. It is in our plans to be upgraded and we update this info weekly, so please check back later."
I think the fact that i'm on an EO line is quite a problem, but i was hoping that the fact they said they are installing 2 cabinets would mean they would be doing something about the EO lines. I am also a massive 6km away from the exchange and around half of the houses are EO.
|
|
|
I bet that has been really annoying with the big delay! Atleast you should be getting it soon! The fact that i am 6km away from the exchange and on an EO line is making me think i might not get fibre optic. Thanks for the reply.

...I am also a massive 6km away from the exchange and around half of the houses are EO. That's a long EO line! FTTC won't work at that distance. You've got to hope there's a closer cabinet being installed for you to benefit...

I remember reading that they only made houses EO when the houses were 1-3 km away from the exchange. Do you have any idea why i am connected to the exchange when i am 6km away? Surely it would be harder for them to do that than connect my to the cabinet.

Sorry, I've no idea.
Have you checked the site you mentioned before www.superfastnorthyorkshire.com for any updates that might help you?

|
|

Unfortunately all it says on super fast NorthYorkshire is:
High Quality Wireless
Multiple Service Providers Selected (1/3)
Technology:
High Quality Wireless
Availability:
Available
It doesn't seem to give any updates or anything.

Thanks for the information badger, i really appreciate it. Do you know whether the the cabinet would be close or not?

*** update ***
Just checked all of them and seems that some are still down as EO Lines:
Field House
Manor
Manor House Cottage
K567238, PCO
Prospect Cottage
Prospect House
Thorville Cottage
I assume one of the above is yours then?

There's some history of the OP's line here: http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/f/4420595-whe... Well "Hill Top Cottage" isn't a valid address on the openreach where and when page, also it doesn't seem to have a NAD Key yet, so maybe it's a new line.
They would have to use their phone number.

No mine is Hill Top Cottage. When i checked it just said my exchange was Sinderby and didn't display any cabinet.

Yeah, your address hasn't got a NAD Key yet which is why it fails to show, which is why you see " Your address has been successfully matched; however we cannot determine ADSL availability at this address. Please try the Telephone Number or Postcode Checker.", your phone number should work.
So with your phone number you see the following:
Telephone Number 01845 xxxxxx on Exchange SINDERBY If so then you are on an EO Line.
You might be lucky and get moved over to cabinet 3.

Yeah i'm afraid that's all it says. I guess i'm just unlucky. Hopefully they do something about it in the future but i'm guessing we are the minority of their problems right now and would probably take a long time to do. Thanks a lot the help!

Where my sister used to live the entire village was on EO lines to an exchange about 3 miles away by road even though there was an exchange around 1.5 miles away in the opposite direction. I can only assume the nearer exchange was built later.

Back in the original thread, I reported a few things.
The first was this:
The raw numbers suggest that half of the postcode makes use of cab 3, and half of the postcode is a direct EO line.
But that appears to be true of almost every postcode in the Carthorpe village.
Looking at the list of postcodes now, it seems that there is a big chunk which are now 100% included in cab 3. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have worded my second sentence that way now...
When looking in detail at some of those "100% by cab 3" postcodes (on Codelook), they show anomalous data such as being both "100% by cab 3" and "100% by EO bundle 1".
Yet the proper BTW DSL checker tells me that none of the properties use cab 3. One example is DL8 2LD.
To you, that anomoly is just that. To me, it is a sign of some plans for "copper re-arrangement", which would re-wire EO lines into cab 3.
You might be right, that you're a minority and would take time to do. However, you'd be a fairly "easy win" given how close cab 3 is.
If BT want to reach their targets in North Yorkshire, they've going to have to target villages like yours, and cover EO lines like yours. Don't give up hope yet...

Thanks for the info. I was just contacted back by the Superfast Northyorkshire team and they said:
"The current plan shows that your location is expected to be included within SFNYs Phase 2 roll out, which started in April 2015. However, it is too early at this stage to say when the superfast broadband service will become available in specific locations. Phase 2 is planned to be completed by December 2016.
However as soon as this work has been completed and fibre is available to you I will send you an email to let you know. In your case the work will involve moving you over from a line directly from the exchange to the new fibre cabinet. Unfortunately I am unable to give you exact timescales but this should be completed in the next few months."
I'm guessing this is what you were talking about with the 'copper re-arrangement'. I'm taking this as good news because at least something is happening about it in the coming months.
|
|
|
|
Yes - "copper re-arrangement" is the generic term they use for adjustments to the copper network with an aim of improving broadband availability & speeds.
For some, like you, this means conversion of EO lines to connect into an existing PCP cabinet.
For others, it means creation of a new PCP cabinet, often placed just outside the exchange building. For yet others, it can mean moving their line from one (distant) PCP cabinet to a different (closer) PCP cabinet.
It is good to see that the SFNY people hold detailed-enough information about the plans to be able to send this answer back.

Just an update: The cabinet was installed in my village on the 14th December and it appears they are working on it more on the 14th January. After this i'm hoping the cabinet is quite close to being activated, am i right or does it usually take more than a month to activate?
|
|
|
, am i right or does it usually take more than a month to activate?
Yes, usually, as in the majority of cabinet installations take longer than a month
|
|
|
|
It's could be months or year!
|
|
|
|
Oh well that is quite disappointing. I'm just hoping it doesn't take a whole year. I guess i should be happy i'm getting it though.
