(Noob) Cabinet question

Hi

Still on ADSL2+ and know which cabinet I would be on if I went with a fibre service. This gives an estimate of 22-32meg. Very recently though, another fibre cabinet has been installed at about a quarter of the distance from the listed one (measured with google maps so I know could be well out). Just wondered if there was any situation where I might be able to get on the closer cabinet in the future? All the surrounding cabinets are likely on the same exchange if that makes any difference.

That's not entirely true, if a new line is requested and its cabinet is full they can get put onto another cabinet.

We have a home near us which is connected to a different PCP cabinet than ours, yet they are still connected to our phone pole.

I spoke to an engineer about that line when they was working on ours a little while back and they said it might of been due to there was no free pair available to our pcp cabinet, so they had to do some fancy routing to get that line to the other pcp cabinet the other side of the main road.

He also said that you can also ask to be relocated to another nearby cabinet, but that costs a lot of money and in most cases its not worth while.

Yeah, the chances are low, but it can and does happen, just like having FTTC and FTTP being available at the same location, it can and does happen.

It basically depends on the circumstances and the engineer(s) you get.

No evidence that its a cabinet for slower lines in an existing cabinet area, but might be for some exchange only lines or it might not even be an Openreach cabinet (e.g. Virgin Media or for mobile mast)

My money is on this being the fibre twin for cab 28

It'll only really happen if the current cabinet is full (no more E-sides from the exchange) and they've tried and failed to put new lines to it.

They'll then fit a link cable between the two lines. Your line will then go to the cabinet that matches your telephone pole and then go off on the link cable to the other cabinet that isn't full.

Yeah it is joined with cab 28. (just been and had a look). Actually the channel they dug runs past cab 28 and continues on a bit further.

There's also a sign with the Carillion Telnet - Openreach logo's on.

Description: Install 3m of 2 poly ducts in Footway,Provide, Renew or Recover 1 DSLAM street cabinet and base...

That is all the work I can see in that area.

The extra digging could be for the power.

To me this seems a bit confusing.

How are you discovering that you are on PCP 12 please? Phone number, address or pure postcode into which checker?

What is "Sky Max" in your sig - is it LLU or via BT Wholesale?

It's to provide FTTC capability to those users connected to PCP 28 which currently does not support FTTC and is being funded as part of the BDUK South Yorkshire roll-out. It's scheduled to be ready for service in early 2017 although I expect those connected to PCP28 would like that to be earlier.

They have just installed a new fibre cabinet (i.e. DSLM) for PCP Cabinet 28 (i.e. phone cabinet) this work is listed for dates 13 Jul - 26 Jul.
And this Fibre Cabinet is estimated to go live November 2016 to Jan 2017 and that they are at the connecting stage of the install.

If you are connected to PCP Cabinet 12 then then I am sorry to say this isn't for you, this is for lines connected to PCP 28.

That's also why I ask what "Sky Max" is. If he is on Sky Connect then his phone number will probably work, if on LLU then of course he needs to use the address option. (As I know you know, but he may not).

No, using just the postcode search doesn't return the exchange or cabinet information if more than one supports the area.
Our area is split over two cabinets and when I enter my postcode in using BT Wholesale checker it just lists ADSL speeds and only the postcode shown >> here <<

Which in your case may be a non-FTTC one.

Though it may have been changed. Your screenshot does suggest it has.

Well no post codes in my area have FTTC, they have FTTP
Like you already know we have all the FTTP hardware since 2011 - 2012 but their system seems to think two sets of hardware are required.
Sill if you ask me, but "should" hopefully be resolved the 27th July.

Possibly, the BT Wholesale checker has changed several times over the last year or so, you can no longer do bulk checks (i.e. 25K addresses ) that I use to do, which now results in a blocked IP for X Time.

Its Sky's unlimted (LLU) service. Got the cab number from the Bt wholesale checker using my phone number.

Thanks for bearing with me guys and also providing the useful answers.

You may think this is a very silly question, but it isn't. Have you had your Sky LLU for many years, predating when they started to insist that your line was also LLU? Who do you pay line rental to?

I ask because the BT Wholesale checker (unless this part of it has also changed recently) does not recognise Sky LLU phone numbers.

The whole setup seems odd to me, with cab 28 being so much closer to you.

What does your address return in the BT Wholesale checker?

Cab 28 is small and simply surrounded by postcodes on cabinet 12 - one of those oddities of how areas grow historically

That makes sense. On the other hand, does it also share postcodes?

Bear in mind the OP is on Sky LLU but also has his number recognised by the BTW checker. Which, unless it has changed very recently, doesn't recognise LLU phone numbers.

There are postcodes that are shared on both cabinets 12 and 28, I saw some earlier (i.e. down Church Ln) when I did some quick checks.
