Higher download speed available?

[link to this post]

:I currently get about 35mbps down and 6.5mbps up. BT HH6 very stable and always reconnects every 13/14 days at those rates.
However my maximum data rate is 6506 / 46405 and Noise margin 6 / 4.9, with Line attenuation 25.5
As my max data rate down is shown as approx 46mbps could/should I be getting a much higher down speed?

Many thanks,

John

Is the 35Mbit a speed test or is it your router connection speed? We need both.

If you're trying speed tests, are they over wifi or Ethernet?

Hi.

Down sync 35mbps, up sync 6.51mbps (from HH6 details). Speed test 33.21 down and 6.22 up.

Does this help?

Can you post the line stats from the log? It sounds like your downstream rate is banded. I think it's great that we're seeing more evidence of this stupid DLM.

Do you happen to know whether you are on a Huawei or an ECI FTTC cabinet? I suspect ECI and interleaving present on the line due to error rates. Cabinet pics.

That's it! Something is dreadfully wrong with your connection. According to the Hub, you're on a very short line. But, the downstream rate is banded and the maximum downstream rate is very low. Can you plug the router into the test socket via a microfilter and post the stats again? Also, check if there's line noise by dialing 17070 and selecting option 2. There should be no noise whatsoever. Try this in both the master and the test socket.

Hi William,

Just noticed what you have seen...this I think.......the data rate is showing in kbps, not mbps! Am I right? I copied and pasted the figures and can confirm that is what the log is saying. Very odd. Am very confident that I am in fact getting those figures in mbps as all speed tests show it as mbps and we are very able to watch tv streaming etc with no problem at all.
Must be a glitch in the HH6?
I am not an expert at this just an enthusiastic amateur!

Yes, it's supposed to read Mbps. The HH6 is poor in many ways especially firmware wise, so it's advisable to purchase a better router with a broadcom (if connected to a Huawei cabinet) or a lantiq (if connected to an ECI cabinet) chipset.

Disagree that the firmware is as bad as you make out. You seem to be posting this out everywhere with little evidence to back it up.

Would I advise them to buy a new router - hell no.

The vast majority of us have perfectly fine syncs using the hub6. Myself included.

Does using a homehub mean your line will sync badly. No.

The issue aint the router here I am afraid.

These conclusions are erroneous. 25dB attenuation is not a very short line - it's moderately long (I'll leave it to others who are more experienced than I to guesstimate how long it is). The Hub is mistakenly reporting sync speeds in kbit/s that are clearly in Mbit/s - 35 Mbit/s at 4.7dB SNR margin is maybe a little low but not very low compared to expectations.

Your suggested debug steps are reasonable - though when plugging in to the test socket, you should ensure there is no dial tone on any other sockets, as it is always possible that one or more extensions is mistakenly connected to the 'wrong' side of the NTE5.

Ah, whoops! My bad! I thought that the noise margin value was the line length value, but it's not! Haha! The lower downstream SNR margin is likely to be caused by either the modem connecting at a less noisy time or before more crosstalk was created by new connections to the cabinet.

That's true, but we don't know if the OP has any extension sockets, so I didn't suggest that.

Oh, I never said that the issue is with the router.

There's evidence right here on this thread! Look at the data rate, it's reported in Kbps not Mbps, that's one piece, oh and the rest well you can find loads in the its log or simply search around on the BTCare Community Forums.

If the OP doesn't wish to book a broadband boost engineer to remove the downstream banding, then I recommended that option as a router such as a Billion BiPAC 8800AXL will correct more errors and resync less, encouraging DLM to remove the banding automatically.

Based on the analysis some time ago from a trawl of all the attenuation/sync data I could find the average works out that sort of range, with 7.5 to 8 Mbps on the upload side

Just as with ADSL2+ of years gone there is the average and the small number of edge cases that seem to buck the trends, but with VDSL2 that can be explained by them being lucky and not having much cross talk potentially

Agreed! But, looking at the stats, there is definitely downstream banding present, proven by the OP saying that the Hub connects at the same downstream rate.

Thank you for all your input. However, my knowledge is limited on this subject so not sure what "banding" is. Is it similar/the same as IP Profile where BT's system restricts the speed? If so does it look like they are doing that and could I it go to a higher download speed. As I said at the beginning, my HH6 always reconnects at 35 mbps download, although the log seems to suggests it could be as high as 46 mbps.It just seems a bit odd to me.

Thanks once again.

Banding is a way of dealing with excessive error rates on FTTC.

On ADSLx it was done by raising the sync-time SNR Margin. This reduced the sync speed so decreased the number of errors. On FTTC it is done with a straight "banding" of the sync speeds. Setting an upper and lower limit.

See BT SIN 498, Para 2.2.1.

AFAIK, it is still SNR margin then banding. That's what I saw with my connection. I think Openreach should've brought over the intervention part of the DLM system on ADSL to VDSL!

Not so easy with FTTC frequency profiles. On ADSLx the upstream and downstream were each contiguous ranges, but the FTTC specifications are for multiple interleaved bands.

Shame. Ah well, at least on the most part, an EU can request a DLM reset which is conducted normally a few days afterwards.

There was some discussion on this very Topic on Kitz forum but cant find it at the moment.

My attainable is 53 but actual is 47 @ 6db. It is though by ones cleverer than me that when interleaving is enabled, like wot mine is, the Broadcom chipset gets the attainable wrong and too high.

My interleaving is currently 923 with INP 3. G.INP is off for the moment but I saw when G.INP got enabled my SNRm shot up to 11db but couldn't get sync to move from 44 which it seemed stuck at.

Though this was possible, it's not something Openreach like doing.... also there's got to be good reason to do so.

Also I don't think Openreach will be rushing to reset any lines when they're in the middle of rolling out a new set of rules/configs.

Might be worth asking what the EUs line estimates are according to BT Wholesale.

PS. BT Smart Hub is fairly decent hub, Firmware is sluggish but works never the less, I can't say it coped well in a busy WiFi environment but then a lot of routers I used couldn't cope either.

In other words, just because it happened to you doesn't mean it happens to most. You may just have been very lucky with your ISP/issue. Although as your ISP is BT it is unusual for them to go out of their way for things like this unless you are in touch with people beyond the first line.

No, not worried about bragging it is just that what happens on a one off may not happen for everyone so you need to be a little more circumspect in your posts. Saying it may happen because you managed it is fine - suggesting that it will happen for everyone because you know of your own experience may give false expectations.

I could win the lottery but if I did I wouldn't post to say everyone will win...
