I have had fibre for several years at around 42-43 meg stable.
I had a jump upto 50meg around 3-4 weeks ago for a week or so and since then it has dropped back down to 42ish and doesn't seem to imrpove.
I am using an openreach modem and an edgerouter x.
I've tried another router and it gives the same results. Will changing the modem help at all?

I just tried several modems on my line and by far the best performer was the ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A. Others I tried were the BT Openreach modem, TP-Link TD-W9970, Billion 8800NL R2. The TP-Link is not a bad performer but let down by wireless performance.
I would suggest looking on eBay for a ZyXEL and giving it a try as I have gained about 5 meg sync since plugging it in after a very quick setup. Note the B10D its replacement has a cheaper broadcom chipset in it and is the same chipset as the TP-Link and Billion.
My sync speeds at 5dB
TP-Link - 64/17
Billion - 62/17
Openreach - 62/17
ZyXEL - 71/17
Good luck.

The OP doesn't need a modem router. He already has an Ubiquiti Edgerouter which is up there with PFSense on features. The Zyxel, and all the others you list, are [consumer] junk compared to it.
OP - your sync rate was obviously just increased by the DSLAM deciding to lower the target SNR. My target SNR recently fell from 7 to 3/4 resulting in a gain of 3-5Mbps. Same as you. This has nothing to do with your equipment and everything to do with BTO's DSLAM.

They all get higher sync than any stand alone modem does on his line, and can be run in bridge mode as a modem only, with the Ubiquiti Edgerouter handling PPP, NAT, etc.

Probably a crostalker on holiday for a week; they switched off their router.
Will changing the modem help at all?
May do; only trial and error and monitoring stats will tell.

Best for the OP to use them in bridged mode.... not as a router
|

Surely what the OP is reporting is DLM attempting a lower SNR, but errors forcing it to back up to 6 again ?

That's exactly what is happening. This fixation from others concerning replacing hardware to improve line speeds is grossly misplaced.

Not always.
Some routers are much better and dealing with errors and are able to attain and maintain higher connection rates.

DLM attempting a lower SNR
That is another cause; I hadn't thought about that; but without stats we will not know 100%

It's not a router, it's a modem.
I agree that certain modem code is better to attain and maintain higher connection rates.
I don't, however, agree that this is a factor in the OPs experience.

|

Ooh, such the pedant
Of course it could have been G.INP enabled then removed for some reason, or a crosstalker, or a lower noise margin as already mentioned.
Without before and after stats it's pretty impossible to say.

Or there was a power cut and the OP was one of the first back on. Then cross-talk increased and after a while DLM decided the error rate was too high.

Is an HG612 or ECI modem? The stats can be obtained if it is an HG612 v 3B.

It's not a router, it's a modem. The OP's modem is a modem/router in bridge mode. Just like the suggested alternatives can be configured.

It's a modem and router, set up as a modem in its default configuration.
Its lack of Wi-Fi makes it no less a router.

Actually, it is a HUB.
You get Modems which do the interfacing from the customer equipment to the line; Routers which manage the routing of incoming data to the various ports and provide facilities such as DHCP; and Wireless Access Points.
A Hub consists of Modem and Router and maybe a WAP too.

woops, someone doesn't know what a Hub is (Check link for what a hub is)

I certainly do know what one is.
So, what is a BT HUB5 ?
It comprises a Modem, Router and WAP.

Do you mean a BT Homehub 5? In which case homehub is a product name not a technology specification. And as it includes the other features that you said make up a router then it isn't a hub by your own definition.

The BT Hub is a product name and does not refer to a networking hub. Don't confuse the two
|
|
|
So, another definition:
2) As a network product, a hub may include a group of modem cards for dial-in users, a gateway card for connections to a local area network (for example, an Ethernet or a token ring), and a connection to a line (the main line in this example).

What is the BT Business Hub 5?
Our next generation BT Business Hub is our newest and fastest wireless hub yet.

That was in the days of acoustic couplers as in that instance it's talking about old dial up

Note the word "our" as it refers to their product. Otherwise it would have been "BT Business Hub 5, the newest and fastest hub yet"
See the difference?
Welcome to marketing jargon

I always love it when people comment, but have never read things properly. I didn't make a quote, I was showing the difference by making my own. This was showing what it would have said if it was referring to a network hub and not their own product name.

If you have an issue with the BT hub being a hub you would be better off talking to BT about it. I am only the messenger

It seems you don't know what the definition of product name is.
If BT called their new product BT smart pooch, according to you that would be a dog, but in reality it could be just another networking product
|
|

Rubbish - where does that definition say acoustic couplers?

I said it's from the days of acoustic couplers when old dial up modems were used, or if you want to get picky with the words "dial in" from that link.

Never heard of the term "sheep"? Nope I guess not as we live in such a barrrmyyy world
Sorry for the sheep joke, could not help it

Not so, as you are the one that says "a" where as BT says "our" there is a big difference and one that you don't seem to understand or comprehend
Also the BT smart hub contains a Network switch and not a Network hub (hence why all data does not go through every port, only the one that it is meant to)

BT smart hub contains a Network switch and not a Network hub You are confused. The only poster to have referred to a network hub is yourself, so you could stop posting here and resume the argument with yourself elsewhere.

I love the way that you've been caught out as not knowing basic networking or even basic primary school English is to tell me I was the one who brought up the subject of a network hub when in fact it wasn't me at all.
I hope you don't live up to the real definition of the character of BatBoy who goes around stealing cars and not coming to the aid of the needy?

You are joking right? no? oh my. I think you need to re-read what you said to me in your last post before the one quoted as that was an insult and rued. I remember you tried arguing with me over 10 years ago on this forum. By the looks of it since I've been away from this forum you've non stopped tried to bully and argue with people.

I remember you tried arguing with me over 10 years ago on this forum. TBH 10 years is a long time to bear a grudge.

It must have been a memorable argument. What was it about?
|
|
|

HAHA, you made that sound like it was some sort of date by using the word "memorable"
|
|
|

Well you said you could remember it, so what was it about?

Well you said you could remember it, so what was it about?
I can remember it perfectly fine and some wise words "Don't argue with so many people that you forget what the argument was about in the first place" It happens in so many wars.
Old golfers never die, they simply loose their balls.
|
|
|
Well you said you could remember it, so what was it about? "Don't argue with so many people that you forget what the argument was about in the first place"
I think you need to take your own advice as you clearly cannot answer what this supposed argument that you remember was about.

I see that you wanted to post yet another insult. How many is that now?
Notice any different between my posts and yours? Well I will tell you. You like to throw insults at people and argue. Where I state facts and back them up and add humour.

How about whole buildings that are sometimes called network hubs
