Hi all
I've got what I believe is a standard FTTP install with an ONT & BBU. I really don't need the BBU as the ONT is right by a UPS that I can use, and I don't use FVA. Is there any reason that I can't remove the BBU?

Not that I can think of.

Think yourself lucky, I had a FTTP install last week and didn't get the battery unit, just the ONT.

Complain to your service provider .... though it's not actually causing any technical issue as such.

Should be OK, Worth keeping it nearby in case of issues in the future ...

Thank you all, replies much appreciated
I take it that the PSU just plugs straight into the ONT instead of the BBU - seems like a simple question with an obvious answer but as it's not my kit I'd rather not make an incorrect assumption

Yep, take the lead from the BBU to the ONTE out, and replace where you removed it from on the ONTE with your supply .......
'course if this causes issues, then expect a bill for repair.

My BBU isn't actually installed, it's sitting in its box on a shelf.
However, that wouldn't be the way to do it with my ONT/BBU as the cable from the BBU has a different type of plug (with more connections) on it than the one from the PSU.
In my case I would unplug the round plug from the PSU which would/should be feeding the BBU and insert it into a different socket underneath the ONT marked 'Power' (i.e. not the socket on the side of the ONT marked 'BBU')

Yep, risks etc... and pay for your own mistakes
Thanks.

The BBU power connector does go into the ONT power input. No idea what the other plug does, but one end of the cable has a CAT5 looking plug on it - even I'm not stupid enough to try and force a barrel connection into a rectangle socket.

That was how I suggested it be done also.

The cat five connects in the middle hole on the bottom of the BBU, then to the multi pinned jobbie at t'other end on the right hand side of the ONTE

Being pedantic , to me that means plug the power supply into the socket on the ONT you just removed the BBU lead from, whereas there are actually 2 different sockets ... at least that's how mine is.

My BBU doesn't have a Cat5 cable (at least not with a RJ45 plug), although it does have a rectangular plug with a locking tab on the end of a fixed lead from the bottom of the unit. The only other connection is a normal barrel power connector socket.

Oh, the ones I have been using/trained on have always been the same for around 4 years....

Mine was supplied 2 years ago, it's an ECI unit.
From the label on the box;
BT Item Code:064634
Description: NGA ECI-BBU-Battery Backup Unit
ECI Model (Cat No.) Y33493
ECI : BBU 4AA/C
AA27270L-A Rev: AE
etc.

Good grief ! I didn't think this would go on for so long !
Here's a picture of the BBU I've just taken off the wall. Was installed Dec 2015.

Well as you've shown us yours, I'll show mine!

Yours appears to have more connections than mine and the socket on yours does appear to be RJ45, however mine is definitely not RJ45. The connector has 2 rows of 4 'contacts', only 7 of which have a metallic conductor present. The only other connection on the unit is the power socket to the right.
The batteries (4 x AA) are accessed by sliding open the cover on the left.
|
|
|
The connection on the other end of the RJ45 looks similar to what you've got there and that plugs into the side of the ONT.
Batteries are 4xAA Ni-MH

. . . No idea what the other plug does, but one end of the cable has a CAT5 looking plug on it . . . It is the telemetry cable, used to notify the ONT of the power supply status.
100% Linux and, previously, Unix.

Never come across one like that before ??
