FTTP providers (via Openreach)

Hi All,

We finally got FTTP enabled over the weekend. Now the hunt is on for a provider that offers speed above 80/20 for consumers. Openreach list 4 providers for consumers:
A&A - only 80/20
BT - 330/30
Spectrum Internet - not offered in my area, only south wales
ZEN - 80/20, faster coming soon!

One caveat is that I really don't want it to be BT. Neighbours have been ordering with BT and getting expectionally poor service including, but not limited to, cancellation of there orders after install dates have been given.

My current provider Merula is getting me a quote for providing a faster service

Anyone know of any other providers?

AFAIK that's it. Plusnet trialling FTTP for existing customers only.
Nobody else seems to sell it.

IDnet are now selling FTTP packages higher than 80/20 to non-business customers as well.

When doing a check on the IDNet website for my line:

TBH I would just go with BT Infinity 4 (330/30) and save a few quid in the process, once FTTP is all setup and working its fairly reliable and just works. With the niche providers, sure you will get better support but you will pay significantly more and more often than not, have download limits - eg IDNet have 1TB limit on their FTTP services.

It's quite pricey at £120 a month almost twice of BT are charging. How can BT provide the service so cheap? Unless everyone else is making massive profit

BT are a mass market provider while the likes of IDNet will have significantly smaller no of customers. Hence why you get truly unlimited usage on BT, ie the light users subsidize the heavy users.

The smaller providers will be making the assumption if you order the faster FTTP packages you are someone who uses it a lot and thus budget for a bigger impact on the bandwidth compared to other providers.

BT Consumer also has the advantage of volume i.e. millions of customers so the impact of one is felt a lot less.

One thing as others have found is that as you go faster you discover which digital sales services actually can provide the files you buy at the speeds you have e.g. no point in having 600 Mbps if the main digital store you use caps downloads from its store at 70 Mbps

Completly appreciate you point about upstream speed.

I guess were still at the begining of faster than 80/20 connections.

He is talking about the downstream speed. Not the upstream. If you are downloading a film for example and the source has a maximum output to you of 70Mbps then your 300Mbps will be twiddling its thumbs so to speak.

Thanks for that, however i was looking for 'consumer' versions as not everyone has a business.

No problem. You do not have to be a business to order. You just can't claim back the VAT

But the OP already said they didn't want to spend £120 a month on it. Business contracts tend to be more expensive - BT are about the only consumer priced provider.

The issue with cancellation of orders after the installation date has been given is unlikely to be BT Retails fault and is likely to be the same on other providers also under the same circumstances. The dates will be set and changed by OR so it tends to affect all suppliers. It can also be down to the work needed to do the last connection affected by the sort of delivery, Concrete, Gravel, Tarmac, Grass, Flowerbed, overhead, Trees etc,

No problem with terminology as the meaning was absolutely clear in the context of the discussion

The problem here is that the FTTP went live Friday night, on the Openreach website. The actual install of FTTP has happened over the last 4 months

The cancelations happened with 1-2 days after people recevied the install dates. So it's probably a problem with BT - Openreach interface and them not talking to each other properly.
