Worth changing to faster fibre package?

[link to this post]

Below are my stats from my SR102 black sky fibre router. I'm on the 40/10 unlimited package. Is there any benefit to me moving to a faster fibre package do you think? Also, how can I find out what speed my line can support? Thanks for reading.

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collision Pkts Tx b/s Rx b/s Up Time
WAN MER 26905229 60513079 0 0 0 601:52:23
LAN Up 21452365 10999341 0 0 1 601:54:19
WLAN Up 26768203 9322844 0 1 1 601:54:19
Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 40000 kbps 9997 kbps
Line Attenuation 19.8 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 7.4 dB 8.8 dB

BT Infinity 2 - Predicted speed 54.7Mbps down/15.7Mbps up. Actual speed 42Mbps down/4.5Mbps up...crazy Left BT as they were poor...
Now with Sky Fibre - 37.5Mbps down, 9.5Mbps up

Hello Zarjaz, thanks for replying. That signature is an old one. With the advent of newer technologies for FTTC (GFast and the like), given my stats, do you think my line would support faster speeds moving forward? Thanks.

No hope with G.fast with those stats, unless one day BT decide to put g.fast closer to the end users. Don't see that happening though

B*gger! No Virgin Media to get either. Going to be a struggle with 4K and Nvidia shield recommends 50Mbps for online gaming! Thanks for responding though robert!

Which is the package you are paying for, however I can't see anywhere in your stats the maximum data rate that your line supports. These will then tell you whether it is worth your while upgrading to a faster package. That you are currently syncing at 40000 Kbps 9997 Kbps suggests that your line is most likely capable of more but without knowing the maximum data rate it is difficult to know whether 10Kbps or 10,000 Kbps more.

If BT Openreach still suggest a predicted speed 54.7Mbps down/15.7Mbps then that is the sort of speed you should be seeing regardless of ISP and if not then you would need to check your internal wiring or get your ISP to check your connection.

Thanks MCM. I'm on Sky Fibre - how would I check the maximum data rate my line can handle?

MCM might have missed the important information of the:

Line Attenuation 19.8 dB
Noise Margin 7.4 dB

The line attenuation shows that you a probably way above the 350meter limit for g.fast. I'm 320 meters from the cabinet and mine is 13.7

Noise Margin looks like you could get extra speed if you were on a 3db profile, but not enough to push it beyond your 50 meg.

Agreed, I did overlook, totally miss, the attenuation and noise margin and whilst as currently deployed g-fast is out of the question I feel that the OP could expect to achieve faster VDSL2 speeds given the line attenuation and noise margin. I suspect that the Openreach figure of 55Mbps isn't too far off what might be achieved with a clean line without too much cross talk and good internal wiring.

I'd guess I'm about 300m from the cabinet but I know the house over the road has a slightly better line than mine so mine must be longer. frown
