Interesting things popping up on roadworks.org

[link to this post]

A whole stack of the telecoms roadworks symbols have appeared over a neighbouring village on roadworks.org.

https://imgur.com/a/CIiyl9j

Nearly all of the notices are the same, something about PON (which I know is passive optical network) and the length of duct. They are all set for this month, some going into next.

Is it safe to assume FTTP is on its way there, given how many are dotted around in the village? It's not every road which I found odd but may the other roads either already have it or it's coming later.

Bizarre we have just the same but actually states "Erect Overhead Fibre Cable"

I think we are getting closer.

How do you "erect a cable"? (Dictionary - Put together and set upright).

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

Certainly looks like it smile

Worth noting that Openreach are working to a March 2020 deadline so you may have sometime to wait although any progress is positive.

Same here, Roadworks.org suddenly looked like it had developed measles in this part of the world. Unfortunately the dates came and went with no traffic lights and no apparent action. A week or so later two new entries appeared for early March with "desilt" in them, as well as "fibre". I would guess that the work was abandoned quite quickly when the ducts were found to be blocked. There was also some mention in the abandoned work of "overhead fibre" so I have my fingers crossed that FTTP migh be on its way.

Mine has done ducting on the main road, and one left fibre cable on a dp on an adjoining road but nothing since... on the A35 Neoscorp Ltd is doing some fibre cabling work - i have no idea if its anything to do OR fibre or not

Three of the roadworks.org entries in the village I showed are active right now. Next time I'm passing I'll have to take a look down some of the streets to see if there is any actual activity. I did actually pass one of that village's street cabs today and an Openreach guy was messing around in the cab. Passed again roughly 3 hours later and he was still there - seems to be something more than just a customer connection.

Ever hopeful. smile

Seeing an engineer in the cabinet won't help with FTTP.
They don't touch the cabinet for FTTP.

So how is the fibre actually run from the exchange if the cab isn't touched? I'm not exactly clued up on Openreach's PON infrastructure design.

the fibre is run underground in ducts or on overhead poles. Any FTTP hardware goes on telegraph poles or in underground chambers.

All that's in the cabinet is a bunch of copper wires. These are left as they are when FTTP is rolled out.
They never need to touch the cabinet when installing FTTP, they never run fibre through the cabinet and they never install FTTP hardware in the cabinet.

The fibre from exchanges runs to underground chambers containing "Aggregation Nodes" which AIUI (can) have several outputs to further aggregation nodes so branching out in a tree structure.

FTTC cabinets are fed from a suitable aggregation point for the target PCP (phone cabinet). FTTP and FTTPoD are also fed direct from aggregation points to splitters and "close-to-premises" Distribution Points.

The PCPs are a completely different network all running on copper from the exchange. For FTTC the new fibre cabinet and its PCP have a short underground link where the phone signal is diverted to the FTTC to be merged or de-merged with/from the VDSL2 the FTTC cabinet DSLAM converts to VDSL2 to you or fibre optics back to the exchange.

The merged signal of phone and VDSL2 goes back to the PCP and connects to the line to your premises. And vice versa.

Looks like Birds Farm in School Lane (which I think is Elmstead) and some properties in Cockaynes Lane and Colchester Main Road were connected to FTTP last June so these would have been well ahead of the December 2019 deadline set for them.

In addition to the answers already given, there's a training video here which lets you see what an aggregation node and a splitter node actually look like.

Hi

Rather than create a new thread, something new has popped up against our ECI cabinet on roadworks.org, described as:

MJ Quinns are to install a new DSLAM cabinet and run approx. 20m of ducting and build a side pod onto existing BT cabinet.

So not sure what that is exactly, perhaps the cab is full or near to full (nothing to suggest actually full on the dslchecker) so they may be adding extra capacity, I'm not aware we are due G.Fast as nothing announced for where I am.

Hi

Many thanks, didn't want it to be G.Fast, as not many people benefit from the extra speed, I certainly wouldn't as too far away, plus potentially delays any eventual FTTP.

Nor me too. I don't want G.Fast cos I rather to wait for FTTP to come but I think Openreach are likely to bring in G.Fast for many of Telford area later this year. frown

Maybe it's like they did down our road recently, they erect poles and put the fibre on them. Or it's just bad use of language - the latter is more likely I guess although understandable, what verb would you use for stringing a fibre along a run of existing poles?

Install.

Edit: Or of course the verb you used, which is very frequently used in such contexts.

I agree that 'Install overhead fibre cable' would have been a better description.

I think 'install' sounds like you are putting something IN something which would not be appropriate quite but I guess better than 'erect' (unless the poles are going up at the same time).
'build' might work but sounds even worse out of context.
Maybe 'fit'?

And stringing, as used in the question and referred to in my reply. Many people string Christmas lights around their house.

Running does somehow imply a little more robustness perhaps.

Also three poles were being replaced. Presumably many others were in acceptable condition.

Contractors came round and was hitting the older poles quite hard with a decent size hammer.

I presume they were checking if any were rotten / hollow.

Is this normal practice.??
