So how is the fibre actually run from the exchange if the cab isn't touched? I'm not exactly clued up on Openreach's PON infrastructure design.
The fibre from exchanges runs to underground chambers containing "Aggregation Nodes" which AIUI (can) have several outputs to further aggregation nodes so branching out in a tree structure.
FTTC cabinets are fed from a suitable aggregation point for the target PCP (phone cabinet). FTTP and FTTPoD are also fed direct from aggregation points to splitters and "close-to-premises" Distribution Points.
The PCPs are a completely different network all running on copper from the exchange. For FTTC the new fibre cabinet and its PCP have a short underground link where the phone signal is diverted to the FTTC to be merged or de-merged with/from the VDSL2 the FTTC cabinet DSLAM converts to VDSL2 to you or fibre optics back to the exchange.
The merged signal of phone and VDSL2 goes back to the PCP and connects to the line to your premises. And
vice versa.
