Leased line vs FTTP infrastructure

[link to this post]

I live in a block in central London with Exchange-only copper lines. So ADSL only. As is common, there are commercial units on the ground floor and flats above. The fibre checkers indicate that fibre broadband is not available.

On the wall in the basement is a cream BT box about 40x30 cm with a laser sticker on it. There is a black underground cable coming in and a white oval tube coming out. I presume this contains leased lines. There are codes like ON1234 TZXX(B) YPXXX/A written on it. I have been asked: if there is fibre in the building why can't we have FTTP, and I am not sure of the proper answer. Is the technology different, or do the fibres go back to somewhere different, or is it for administrative or commercial reasons, for example?

Many thanks to the experts for any insight. I very generally understand the GPON FTTP topology.

Leased lines go back to different places and even if a custom job was undertaken to get this bit of fibre hooked up the existing GPON FTTP handover node at the appropriate phone exchange there is still the question of getting the data from the fibre into the flats. That is assuming that all the parts of the leased line are still in place.

Probably better to approach people like Hyperoptic and Community Fibre for them to roll-out

Many thanks, Andrew, it seems that leased lines are basically quite a different setup. Maybe one could lease an Internet connection and distribute it via Ethernet cables, but we don't have the appetite for implementing and administering that. I agree that seeking another provider seems best.

Yes alas the FTTP service is GPON based, whereas what it sounds like to me is that there is some kind of "dedicated ethernet" service there or historically there. Often known as EAD or similar, and they're not the same in intent, nature or how they work.

For ease, you can think of it as being a different type of fibre.

As there is already fibre at the premises, it would likely be cheaper to order a similar "fibre ethernet" service as most of the work is done and network is there in-situ, and it would in theory be possible for some enterprising soul to provide some form of connectivity that is shared to those living there, but it is not without other issues.

It isn't however of any relevance to your desire for FTTP, and won't help at all with that.
