Strange Speedtest Results

[link to this post]

I got Gigafast 500 installed last week, but when i do speed tests, i get varying results.

With Thinkbroadband Speedtest, i get

Avg TBB Download - 124.4
Avg Http x6 Download - 231.4
Avg TBB Upload 48.6

With speedtest.net i get

Download - 204.36
Upload - 326.22

Any ideas why this would be so vastly different ?

Without seeing the graphs from the speed test hard to say, it may be the upload is varying a lot and one tester is reporting a peak, or one tester is running against a server on the providers network and the extra bit of Internet to our server in London is the bottleneck

Assume you are testing over Ethernet, and if the PC is a reasonable one then both testers show something is up with the download since both are substantially slower than what you should get for a 500 Mbps service

I am using a gigabit hard wired connection and the speed from speedtest.net does change quite a lot during the day, early morning up and down is shows over 500.

Both of these results were done within minutes of each other

Upload on Gigafast for many does not appear symmetric (other services using our tester don't have the issue)

The download it may be contention kicking in rather than any actual fault
