Not getting past 10mb Upload on FTTP Fibre?

[link to this post]

Hi guys,

I just had my FTTP activated 2 days ago via BT, and for some reason i am getting the same upload as i am when i was on copper. The download has maxed out at 300mb, but the max upload is 50mb and i'm getting nowhere near that at just 10mb.

I thought that everyone should pretty much be getting not much differentiation on speed as the Fibre element no longer differs based on distance to the exchange/cabinet? So everyone thats is on a FTTP connection should be getting close to those speeds. Some people are getting 30mb which i still think is reasonable tbh but for me doing alot of syncing and uploading it doesnt make any diff from when i was on copper frown

Have spoke to BT and they said that its in the confirmation that upload is 10mb minimum and 50mb maximum so i cant really complain, but i literally stated the fact that why are some people getting 30-50mb when Fibre is supposed to eliminate any type of differentiation, he just kept stating that 10mb is still within the minimum. Super frustrating.

Any ideas i could put forward to convince them to look into it? Thanks

Its possible it is a very busy area but that is rare.

What can happen is systems still remember your previously configured up load speed. A postcode recently had uploads stuck at 20 Mbps, but with a different router speeds were good, then after having the other hardware running for a hour or two putting the BT kit back the upload speed improved.

So if you have a different router you can use that is worth trying.

If this was the FTTP being busy then you would expect things to be better at off peak times e.g. 1am to 6am

ahhhhhh ok i am going to try use my old asus router and then retry it that way.

in terms of busy, my FTTP was only activated a few weeks back in my area and the engineer said i am the first one to take out FTTP in my entire estate lol

Firstly, just to be clear, the package you bought was a 300/50 one, and you bought it from BT Retail? Did they supply you with a router, if so which one?

Before chasing the service provider you will need to rule out problems with your test endpoint and with your router. Things like poor NIC drivers and antivirus software can seriously hammer performance, and these are not the service provider's fault. So:

1. Try a completely different endpoint device (laptop, PC etc) for performing the tests. Do you get exactly the same upload speed from both? Of course, it must be wired into your router, not wireless.
2. Try different speedtest sites - e.g. thinkbroadband lab's tester as well as speedtest.net. Share the graphs - are they flat at 10M, or spiky?
3. If possible, try a completely different router; and/or
4. Try removing the router entirely, by connecting your PC directly to the ONT, and setting up a PPPoE connection directly from your PC (you may need to Google how to do that)

If you get a flat 10Mbps upload consistently, then it's possible you've been rate-limited in BT's network. It seems unlikely, especially if you are achieving 300Mbps download, but not impossible.

If that were the case, the solution would be to change to a better service provider. Sadly if BT's T&Cs say 10M is all you paid for, then you're not going to be able to get out of the contract.

Also try a different ethernet cable or you could connect a computer directly to the ONT and create a PPPoE connection bypassing the router.

See http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/t/4634661-re-...

It would be nice to understood the root cause of this type of upload speed restriction on FTTP.

Yes i went with the 300/50 package and via BT retail (i was the OP who posted the BT glitch yday lol)

They sent me the BT Smarthub 2.

so i tried speedtest.net with my PC hardwired in and then also my Phone via 5gz wifi

(cant seem to find an option to post a pic in here? lol)

but both upload speeds are maxed at 10.2mb and the way the graph is that it shoots up (just slightly above the 10mb) and then it flatlines on 10mb, is not spiky at all when it is at the 10mb mark it is pretty much a perfect line across. So it basically seems like it is trying to shoot up way past that initially but then it is held back.

going to try my old Asus router now and see what happens with that.

i am going to then look up the PPPoE thing mentioned and see if that makes any diff, if not then im going to provide BT the results and see what they say

ohhhhh kayyyyy then........

I just plugged in my old ASUS RT-N66U and i only got 99mb down but i think thats what it is limited to because it is pretty old but then i instantly got 52mb upload! lol

im going to leave it in for maybe an hour or so to see if it forces the line to recalibrate and then i will switch back over to the homehub and see if it speeds upto 50mb upload. will update once i find out. Thanks for that suggestion btw, guess its not really BT's problem on their end since i can obviously get 50mb up at some point

Believe upload traffic is rate limited by the broadband hardware, so this setting is getting stuck and not refreshing.

Running with different hardware for a while i.e. different MAC possibly triggers resending the details
