Hi guys,
I just had my FTTP activated 2 days ago via BT, and for some reason i am getting the same upload as i am when i was on copper. The download has maxed out at 300mb, but the max upload is 50mb and i'm getting nowhere near that at just 10mb.
I thought that everyone should pretty much be getting not much differentiation on speed as the Fibre element no longer differs based on distance to the exchange/cabinet? So everyone thats is on a FTTP connection should be getting close to those speeds. Some people are getting 30mb which i still think is reasonable tbh but for me doing alot of syncing and uploading it doesnt make any diff from when i was on copper
Have spoke to BT and they said that its in the confirmation that upload is 10mb minimum and 50mb maximum so i cant really complain, but i literally stated the fact that why are some people getting 30-50mb when Fibre is supposed to eliminate any type of differentiation, he just kept stating that 10mb is still within the minimum. Super frustrating.
Any ideas i could put forward to convince them to look into it? Thanks

Its possible it is a very busy area but that is rare.
What can happen is systems still remember your previously configured up load speed. A postcode recently had uploads stuck at 20 Mbps, but with a different router speeds were good, then after having the other hardware running for a hour or two putting the BT kit back the upload speed improved.
So if you have a different router you can use that is worth trying.
If this was the FTTP being busy then you would expect things to be better at off peak times e.g. 1am to 6am

ahhhhhh ok i am going to try use my old asus router and then retry it that way.
in terms of busy, my FTTP was only activated a few weeks back in my area and the engineer said i am the first one to take out FTTP in my entire estate lol

Firstly, just to be clear, the package you bought was a 300/50 one, and you bought it from BT Retail? Did they supply you with a router, if so which one?
Before chasing the service provider you will need to rule out problems with your test endpoint and with your router. Things like poor NIC drivers and antivirus software can seriously hammer performance, and these are not the service provider's fault. So:
1. Try a completely different endpoint device (laptop, PC etc) for performing the tests. Do you get exactly the same upload speed from both? Of course, it must be wired into your router, not wireless.
2. Try different speedtest sites - e.g. thinkbroadband lab's tester as well as speedtest.net. Share the graphs - are they flat at 10M, or spiky?
3. If possible, try a completely different router; and/or
4. Try removing the router entirely, by connecting your PC directly to the ONT, and setting up a PPPoE connection directly from your PC (you may need to Google how to do that)
If you get a flat 10Mbps upload consistently, then it's possible you've been rate-limited in BT's network. It seems unlikely, especially if you are achieving 300Mbps download, but not impossible.
If that were the case, the solution would be to change to a better service provider. Sadly if BT's T&Cs say 10M is all you paid for, then you're not going to be able to get out of the contract.

Also try a different ethernet cable or you could connect a computer directly to the ONT and create a PPPoE connection bypassing the router.

See http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/t/4634661-re-...
It would be nice to understood the root cause of this type of upload speed restriction on FTTP.

Yes i went with the 300/50 package and via BT retail (i was the OP who posted the BT glitch yday lol)
They sent me the BT Smarthub 2.
so i tried speedtest.net with my PC hardwired in and then also my Phone via 5gz wifi
(cant seem to find an option to post a pic in here? lol)
but both upload speeds are maxed at 10.2mb and the way the graph is that it shoots up (just slightly above the 10mb) and then it flatlines on 10mb, is not spiky at all when it is at the 10mb mark it is pretty much a perfect line across. So it basically seems like it is trying to shoot up way past that initially but then it is held back.
going to try my old Asus router now and see what happens with that.
i am going to then look up the PPPoE thing mentioned and see if that makes any diff, if not then im going to provide BT the results and see what they say
|
|
|
|
ohhhhh kayyyyy then........
I just plugged in my old ASUS RT-N66U and i only got 99mb down but i think thats what it is limited to because it is pretty old but then i instantly got 52mb upload! lol
im going to leave it in for maybe an hour or so to see if it forces the line to recalibrate and then i will switch back over to the homehub and see if it speeds upto 50mb upload. will update once i find out. Thanks for that suggestion btw, guess its not really BT's problem on their end since i can obviously get 50mb up at some point

Believe upload traffic is rate limited by the broadband hardware, so this setting is getting stuck and not refreshing.
Running with different hardware for a while i.e. different MAC possibly triggers resending the details

Ah right so maybe i need to run it off my old router for a day or so and then revert back to the smarthub 2?
i just put the SH2 back in and its limited back down to 10mb upload again
|
|
|
Short cut would be do a factory reset on the SH2 and run with the Asus for an hour and try again.

Ah right so maybe i need to run it off my old router for a day or so and then revert back to the smarthub 2? It took an hour or so to reset upload speed for me, as described in the other thread, but I do wonder if it was one particular hub of the few I tried that forced the reset. I do know that just using PPPoE on my PC as a direct connection didnt reset the upload speed.
Its also strange that its only the upload speed that gets stuck, not the download speed. I would imagine there are possibly thousands of FTTP users out there unaware that their upload speed has been restricted in this way. After all, most people focus on their download speed,

After all, therell probably be others in the future with the same problem, and it would be good to establish what the fix might be.

Did you find a fix for this?
I upgraded to BT FTTP 500 this week.I have the Smart Hub 2 running and have found my download is perfect at 500Mb but upload stuck at 10Mb. I factory reset the hub and was consistently getting 70Mb upload for a day or so but it's now dropped back to 10Mb again.
Any ideas about what I can do? 10Mb is unfortunately the upload guarantee so not sure how helpful BT will be

your guaranteed 10meg upload - you get 10 meg upload (ie you got what you paid for)
i assume you could purchased a higher upload package but you chose not to
now you have a decision to make - either keep waht you paid for or pay more for more upload

Huh?
73Mb is the expected upload for BT FTTP 500 package.
Something is reducing that to 10Mb.
10Mb is the minimum upload speed guarantee by BT. Way short of the 73Mb I should be able to get on my package and have seen possible on my connection but something keeps dropping it back down.

My fix was described at http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/4631144-how-i...
Ok so just swapping routers back and forth seemed to fix it? i presume it's still ok?
I don't have another router to test with but I'll another factory on the SH2.

I've factory reset my Smart Hub 2 and consistently now getting 50Mb upload. Hopefully it sticks this time!

As far as I am aware there is no minimum upload speed guarantee (that I can see), only the minimum download speed guarantee, login onto your BT Account and look at your products and look at the info for your speeds.
There are normal speeds listed, so your speeds for your connection will be normal speed of 500Mb download with a stay fast guarantee of 250Mb (minimum speed guarantee) and a normal upload speed of 73Mb.
TBH I would try and use a different router than the SH 2 and use that for 3 to 7 days to see if that drops down to the 10Mb you are seeing when using the SH2.
You might have an iffy SH2.

MyBT has just the minimum download speed guarantee whilst the order email has minimum download and upload of which upload is 10mbps.
I'll keep an eye on it and get on to BT and try to get a replacement SH2 if it keeps happening
|
|
|
Yup, you are correct I just checked the email from BT and it does say the following:
More about your speedsMaximum download speed: Maximum upload speed: Minimum upload speed:
930Mbps 110Mbps 10Mbps
On average, customers on the same broadband package get a download speed of:
910Mbps
Oh wow I never noticed that minimum upload speed, funny enough the speeds quoted on the phone never said anything about a minimal of 10Mb upload or I would of questioned it because the 900 package was chosen for the 110Mb upload speeds.

Is everyone aware that while the BT 900 service is not cheap it is still far cheaper than any leased line that will guarantee you 100 Mbps upload.
If people want 110 Mbps guaranteed then the price will need to go up.
Reality will be though that for the vast majority of the time everyone once their hardware is configured correctly will exceed this figure.
The 10 Mbps upload original poster has was clearly the issue with the settings getting stuck in the BT hub.

To me, as a VM customer, it does seem a little low, as my VM service is 20 Mbps upload. I would have thought an FTTP service would have as a minimum the high level of the FTTC products? Or am I expecting too much for a consumer service? Maybe it just needs rewording as "minimum 10, average 20 etc?"
In this world of home working and video calling, the 20 upload of my VM is now essential, compared to the 4.5 Mbps I used to get with FTTC. Despite its unreliability I'm glad I moved last year. I don't need 200 download, I wanted about 50, but I needed 20 upload. Hence 200/20, rather than VM's 100/10 product.

That's why I said they might have an iffy SH2 in my second from last post.
My last post was referring to I was unaware of the 10Mb min upload, like I said I was not told of the minimum of 10Mb upload even when I was telling them I was upgrading for the faster upload speed which I use every now and then.
According to my Samknows White box I seem to me getting full speed up and down and have done throughout the day, so I cannot moan.
As for the price I think its rather good considering it was what we were paying for the fibre 250 (300:50) package.
Yeah I did check the leased line a while back so I am aware of the high prices, but luckily when I have needed to upload a huge content file to a remote server the speed has been there (like yesterday).

And on your Virgin Media what is the guaranteed minimum upload?
Massive difference between what a provider guarantees and what people see for the majority of the time.

Only iffy in the sense that the software push of upload settings did not get sent or was not applied.

And on your Virgin Media what is the guaranteed minimum upload? I don’t actually know, I suspect its about 1 Mbps - and quite a lot at the moment it is 0 Mbps due to disconnections. (Which I think are down to VM and my router being incompatible). FTTPoD is unavailable to me living in a (small) block of flats, so VM my only choice when VDSL didn’t deliver sufficient upload.
Massive difference between what a provider guarantees and what people see for the majority of the time.
Understood and I agree, and hence why wondering if BT should publish alongside the Min, an ‘average’ given FTTP should remove distance dependency.

The figures on the product pages are averages, i.e. when up to went away providers had to show the speed that at least 50% were getting in terms of throughput.

My point from earlier is that i can theoretically obtain 73Mbps upload on my FTTP 500 package, Consistently getting 10Mbps suggests a cap or configuration issue somewhere. If it was fluctuating then i could understand it might be contention somewhere. Whilst I understand10Mbps is the minimum upload it is so low i think it warrants investigation.
The BT forum has a very long thread on the subject which seems to be related to the Smart Hub 2 configuration and requiring intervention by BT.
My upload is currently approx 50Mbps which im happy with. I'll keep an eye on it and ask BT to look at if it goes back down to 10Mbps

I raised the issue in BT forum and a moderator offered to help. The issue turned out to be a bug within the Smart Hub 2 firmware which BT can remotely fix. I'm now back up to 70Mbps upload
