EO in London - help getting FTTP

[link to this post]

Hi All,

EO line in Canonbury. We set up a small CFP and have a quote for £14k for FTTP. No vouchers available as in London.

Any suggestions/schemes for financial help ? eg Council

When you say 'small CFP' how many residential properties and businesses are being included?

£14k between 13 premises doesn't sound too bad, the ROI to a business over a leased line is worth £3k in the first year so it should be an easy sell.

Where about in Canonbury are you? We are on Canonbury Park North, also EO as are is Alwyne Square and parts of Grange Grove.

I’ve resorted to leased line to get a decent service as I refuse to go back to VM cable. We’re actually getting connected tomorrow (fingers crossed).

I doubt very much that Islington would be offering any funding, unless possibly there was a (reasonably substantial) social housing aspect that could be enabled under the CFP. I couldn’t see them otherwise contributing anything.

Having done the FTTPoD thing in Suffolk I’m well aware of the costs and timescales. You could well be in for a long slog with CFP. Perhaps not as long as my build took but it won’t be fast.

Leased line sounds bonkers, but I’ve run the numbers against what oD cost me and after 3 years I’m about lineball on total costs, as you can get away without paying ECCs for many properties in central London.

if there are no voucher it has to be funded privately - you cannot use public money to fund a CFP

ECC = Excess Construction Charges. The amount of money over and above the amount the supplier is willing to spend to build a connection - so the amount the customer will have to pay to get the connection built.

Gotcha yeah up by Highbury / Drayton Park. Yeh ECC's as explained by sheephouse above.

There is a typically more "cover" on the first few thousand pounds of ECC's for a leased circuit than for FTTPoD/CFP, as the total recovery a provider makes (over 3 years) on a leased circuit provides a generous shall we say buffer. As an aside if you were to order a leased circuit on a 1 year basis (very rare) then you would expect to pay all the ECCs up front.

Finally it may sound a lot on the face it, but circa £1K charge to get CFP (or what is effectively socialised FTTPoD) is really pretty good.
