Remove 55Mbps line limit?

[link to this post]

Hi folks

We bought a house and after a bit of hassle and a weeks delay our TalkTalk line went live today. I noticed our line was syncing at exactly 55Mbps down and 10Mbps up and I know the previous home owner had a 55Mbps package with BT so I'm guessing the limit has been left on the line by mistake?

I got in touch with TalkTalk and asked if they'd be able to remove the limit as the HG612 modem I have says my max attainable rate is 68Mbps down and 26Mbps up but TalkTalk said the low sync speed is due to the stabilization period and to give them a shout in 14 days if the sync doesn't increase. I don't think they understood what I was getting at regarding the previous owners fibre package unless the 55Mbps limit does get removed automatically as the line is training? I mentioned that my minimum guaranteed speed was 63.3Mbps but they said I need to wait a fortnight to see if the sync speed hits that by itself before they'll do anything.

It's not a huge deal and I don't mind waiting 14 days but if there's anything I can do to get the limit removed myself I'll give it a go. Every megabit counts 😅

TalkTalk don’t do a 55/10 service. So if your service is authenticating OK to TalkTalk, that seems somewhat odd.

The new connection, if using the same DSLAM port in the cabinet as the last owners connection ought to have had reset to the new profile

Do TalkTalk provision people on the 55/10 wholesale service if they think they won't be able to get more than that? I believe some ISPs have done this in the past in order to save themselves a few pennies on the wholesale line charges.

I thought BT had upgraded all the 55/10 circuits to 80/20 automatically. Mine certainly was about 3 years ago. Dont think they do 55/10 now.

As I say there was some confusion between TalkTalk and Openreach, our go live date was originally 20/4/21 but it didn't happen. My modem synced to TalkTalk on that date but at the 55Mbps speed of the previous owners BT package. My router received a TalkTalk IP address but it wouldn't let any traffic through and my phone number wasn't working, it said "this number isn't currently receiving incoming calls" when you tried to ring it and I couldn't phone out either.

They said I'd need an engineer out to fix everything and I had one scheduled to come this morning but instead of that I got an e-mail just after 9 this morning saying that everything was up and running but the sync speed didn't change from the previous 55Mbps. I did reboot the modem but it didn't change it.

What's weird is I have a second line from TalkTalk Business which uses the same physical line coming into the house and that syncs at 80/20 so I'm not sure why my max attainable rate is 68Mbps on this line. Is there usually such a big disparity between connections on the same line?

I'll attach the stats from the modem for both lines to show what they say:

Residential line

Business line

No idea but the previous owner got fibre a couple of months ago and the sync speed was always 55/10 (I know the folk I bought the house from). It never wavered from that.

You can still buy 55/10 wholesale.

Thanks

They still do 55/10.

They only upgraded those that would benefit from the upgrade.
It was taking advantage of an OpenReach promotion where lines could be upgraded to a higher package for free.

If you joined BT after the free upgrades were done then you didn't benefit.

BT don't sell specific packages anymore like "up to 80Mb", but rather average speeds.

BT Fibre 1 for example is either provisioned on 40/10 or 55/10 depending on your personal line estimates.
Most people who take Fibre 1 are provisioned on 55/10

What's the relevance of what product BT sell customers and what product you can buy Wholesale?

That's a very random answer indeed.

I read it as '55/10 still exists as an Openreach GEA service, so the line must be stuck on that profile' as there had been previous discussion of 55/10 being superseded. Of course, what is offered to customers by CPs and what is offered to CPs by Openreach are not one and the same.

But perhaps I read something that didn't make sense in a way that didn't make sense to generate a point that was relevant...

Sounds like it's definitely a stuck profile, I'll maybe give them a phone tomorrow to see if I have more joy there than I did with the text chat but if not I'll have to wait the 14 days. Will it need an Openreach engineer to fix it?
