Fibre cable but no connection point?

[link to this post]

So, just curious to understand what's going on here...

At the back end of last year a new cable (which I'm assuming is a FTTP cable) appeared along our road which runs immediately past my house. My nearest neighbour, who are approx. 180m further down the road, are now able to order superfast broadband. I've since been in touch with Openreach to query why I'm not able to order the same, and the best I can glean is that the nearest connection point is at my neighbours, and Openreach aren't willing to connect me at the moment because "it's too far".

I don't know, but I'd have thought it would have been sensible to have installed a connection point at my property when they put the line in? Anyway, just thought I'd pop a post up here to see whether I'm missing anything here?!

Put in the postcode / then house number of your neighbour that can order (presumably native FTTP) into the BT Broadband Availability checker.

Then do the same for your address.

Post the results here (obscuring/anonymising any sensitive personal address info).

I suspect if it is an FTTP service that has been brought it may be part of an FTTP on Demand order, which is paid for.

OK yeah your neighbour definitely has native FTTP connected up. Which it it was only 7 months ago can’t have been a special Fibre on Demand order. Unfortunately you do not have native FTTP available to order.

I’m presuming this is rural or semi-rural given the distances between you and neighbours connection. Are there any further properties that you know of that are passed further along in either direction?

If there are you may have a slim chance of appealing to OR to say that you were missed off the rollout. Unfortunately though due to the distances etc, I think the odds are not stacked in your favour, but worth a further shot.

Edit - I’m going to contradict myself, in theory it could have been a FoD order on the neighbours, as it would now show on the checker as native. Duh. Still it doesn’t change matters as it’s too far to run a drop. You would need to have a distribution point (CBT) on a pole mounted far closer to your place.

Semi-rural... we're just on the edge of a large town. About 250m away from the edge where the houses begin. Some can and some can't order fibre.

No bother, I was just surprised that they ran a cable past our house but didn't put a CBT on the pole next to us...!

Don't forget, once FTTPoD is installed it becomes "native" FTTP in that checker smile.

Connections: OnePlus 8 Pro, 4G+ (LTE) max 165Mbps down, 24Mbps up on Three Mobile, and B311 4G+ router, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

Yep indeed. Why I wrote it then immediately corrected myself above. There's no real way of knowing if the connection down the road was FoD or part of a larger rollout without speaking to the neighbour.

So for example my connection which was FoD ordered in 2018 completed in 2019, now obviously checks out as native as it does for my two nearest neighbours served by the same CBT. So the 'line' that serves our CBT probably passes a few dozen properties on the way to us, as we are the furthest from the node, but none of them have native FTTP available. At least not until OR complete their local rollout according to their programme....perhaps by 2024 or so...

I’m going to guess you’re in a similar situation to an area near me; rural but served from an FTTC cabinet on the edge of town and there has been a BDUK project to improve available speeds for addresses falling below the ‘Superfast’ definition (24Mb/s or 30Mb/s).

Can see your neighbour further down the road meets that criteria, you don’t unfortunately.

Thanks everyone for their replies and help.

Yeah, our internet isn't awful and we can wait until the proper rollout, though I don't think we ever see anything above 20Mb/s. It's a bit of a pain when two of us are using Zoom etc, but we've managed for the last year so I think we'll get by! Just a tad frustrating when you know the infrastructure goes right past the front door!

You could try contacting your local BDUK project. Do you know what speeds your immediate neighbours are getting? If theirs are also below the Openreach estimates it might strengthen your case.

Other point is to make sure your wiring within the house is optimal, ie, using a filtered master socket not dangly filters and all unused wiring/extension sockets disconnected.
