Question About Switching From OR FTTP to an AltNet

[link to this post]

Hi all,

OR FTTP has recently been installed at our property, however a local ISP Jurassic Fibre, are also starting to rollout in the area. We would like to support them, as they are a local ISP, but when/if they decide to serve us, how would this work? Would they be able to use the new dropwire that OR provided, or would they have to run a totally seperate cable?

Thanks!

Will

If they build their own network then they will need to deploy their own drop wire.
They cannot be shared.

Gotcha! Thanks, John. I mean OR do offer PIA so JF can use their poles, but I think JF run their own fibre, thinking about it.

I wouldn't recommend them. They're very basic in terms of network, and they're not really "local" - they're owned by a big company that isn't even vaguely local, don't be so fast to think of them as local even though they keep saying they are!

They would have to install separate cabling etc.

Honestly though, you've got more choice using an Openreach based option, and until Jurassic has better overall network connectivity, it's a bit miserable when you try and use a service they don't have good connections to.

Nothing local about Jurasic. They are another monster investment bank having a punt.

Yep they 100% run their own XGS-PON fibre network. They may or may not use PIA, but even if they did it, the drops to premises would be completely separate to anything from OR.

Had a look at their packages and their middle of the road 450/100 package looks about right price wise. The top package at 950/200 seems a bit pricey, say against the competition using OR (their main competitor fibre network provider). Note I'm discounting the OR 1000/220 service as virtually no residential ISP offers that, as the pricing is frankly embarrassing.

Their other obvious competitors would be other altnets which run symmetric 900 Mbps or 500 mbps class services - but I don't think they cross or overbuild any?

Really? I've only heard good things about them! Have you had any experience with them?

Well, they've only rolled out in parts of the South West so far, so I call that fairly local!

Yes, OR offer PIA to JF. I'm not too sure if they cross or overbuild over symmetric FTTP.
