When to still use copper

[link to this post]

There's a new build house in my road. Assuming when whoever ends up buying it, has an Openreach provided internet connection, will this 'kick start' FTTP in our road, or will they make do with copper for a few more years, until it's decided to convert the whole road ?

If it's a single house development, it's unlikely to get FTTP at all. Developments of 20+ houses get FTTP from Openreach for free; developments of 2-19 houses can also request it, but require a developer contribution of up to £2,000 per plot (so a cheapskate developer may choose not to pay for it).

Even if this new development were to get FTTP, the subsequent infill of FTTP to the remaining properties might not happen for a very long time.

Will definitely be copper for a single plot.

Even if it was a few plots and they opted to pay for FTTP it would very likely only cover the new builds, though sufficient spine capacity would be pulled in for when your street is eventually covered.

Yes, it's a single development. The house is replacing a derelict old bungalow that was knocked down about two years ago.

I'll carry on waiting patiently for my strand of glass.................

In that case, I expect they'll re-use the existing copper pair that served the old bungalow. It might even get the same phone number smile

Ha, yes, though judging by the tangled and mutilated remains of the drop wire dangling from the post, I don't think anyone chopped the cable before the bulldozer moved in !
