Can VM DIA be converted to FTTP?

[link to this post]

So I'm not in a FTTP area. Well, I am, but Openreach isn't fitting it on my street.

I wondered if it's possible to go from a Virgin Media leased line, to their project lightning FTTP. I'm aware that they currently do RFoG and are only trialling GPON. But If I were to order a leased line from them, what are the odds than in a year or two i'd be able to convert it to a regular FTTP contract and not a leased line?

I think the answer is going to be 0. But short of someone handing me £18,000 to give to Openreach, it doesn't look like I'll get a fibre line that uses an actual optical fibre cable any time soon.

Well as you suspected....0

They are worlds apart. Completely different product sets - that you don't simply 'convert' between.

Why do you believe Openreach not rolling FTTP to your street -have they missed your street completely (as part of a wider rollout) or what exactly?

Hey

Thanks for your reply.

They fitted FTTP here in 2019. They missed out huge swathes of the town. Anyway we don't have it and the choices here are Virgin Media, or 70mbit DSL.

I was aware that the leased line and GPON were different, but figured hey they'd be sticking a cable in, can they just change what's at the other end of the cable and make it a GPON in a year or two. But yeah I thought as much too.

For the same reason you can have an Openreach EAD sat in the corner of your building but it won't be used to serve FTTP. They are different networks, they just happen to be fibre.

Virgin aren't trialling GPON. They haven't touched GPON at any point that I'm aware of.

Their FTTP is RGOF (radio frequency over glass) which basically converts the DOCSIS signal to light over fibre then converts it back again at the property.

Virgin are currently trialling XGS-PON in a few areas with the intention of upgrading all the coax/HFC areas to FTTP in future.

The current Virgin FTTP deployments use a specific deployment of cabinets.
Virgins leased lines don't connect to these cabinets.

As mentioned by others 1 cannot be converted to the other. They are entirely separate.
