g.fast available on next DP

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I am looking at g.fast estimates in Hertford, cabinet 26. This cabinet is g.fast enabled.

Looking at the postcode SG14 3AR, I can see that any line served from this DP gets g.fast estimates of above 300Mbps, however the very next DP up the street, measured at ~60 metres extra distance has g.fast entirely absent from the checker. I've seen g.fast estimates shown at 150Mbps and below, and I've no doubt that the speed does not degrade that fast over just 60 metres, so this seems strange to me.

A couple of potential reasons spring to mind:

- database error?
- g.fast pod is full? (would it still show on the address checker for live properties?)
- something else I've missed?

G.Fast does drop off a bit of a cliff edge. It wouldn't surprise me if they've pulled in the boundary because of disappointed customers getting less-than-expected performance near the edge.

60m along the pavement doesn't *necessarily* mean only 60m longer loop.

The fact that the "clean" VDSL estimate is only 72 - 55 Mbps makes me think that you are further from the cabinet than you expect. As a rough rule of thumb, you can expect G.Fast to work reasonably well if you have a clean 80M VDSL; if you get less than that, you're into grey (or yellow) territory. If this property gets only get 55M VDSL then I'd be surprised if G.Fast gave an acceptable service.

The speed range 72-55 suggests a loop length of 350-550m, and that's too far for G.Fast to work reliably. (Having said that, the G.Fast loop may be a bit shorter than the VDSL loop, if there is a noticeable distance between the VDSL cabinet and the PCP)

Do you have an actual FTTC sync rate for this property, rather than an estimate? If you're getting below 80Mbps on FTTC then it's very unlikely that G.fast will provide a good service.

The other DP may well double back on itself before heading in the direction of the cabinet or may take a completely different route.

Looking at a few local addresses on the wholesale checker it looks as though the line length between the 2 DP's is greater than 60m, even though they may only be 60m apart.
The VDSL estimates drop a decent bit between the 2 DP's.

With the VDSL estimates in your 2nd screenshot I would not expect G.Fast to show on the checker.

There is the odd line with low VDSL estimates that does get offered G.Fast, particularly on lines that suffer lots of crosstalk.
e.g very busy PCP's with 500+ VDSL2 subscribers (2 separate fibre cabinets/pods).

It could just be a database error but in my opinion it's simply a line length issue.
