Assuming one were to buy their own ONT, would it just work or would they need somehow to authenticate it with gnetwork?
No, the same as Virgin Media don't allow you to attach any DOCSIS cable modem you may buy.

Think of the ONT as the Openreach socket on the wall, its part of the building, and you connect your own router to it using an Ethernet cable.

I have seen earlier G.network installations using Huawei HG8245Q2. Both this and the Nokia G2425G-B are ONTs with router and WiFi in the same box, and the fibre plugs into it. The small box on the wall that G.network fit is just a joint box on the incoming fibre, providing a socket for the pluggable cable to the ONT.

Time will tell, but I suspect the wall mounted ONT and ethernet to a router will be more reliable and cause less call-outs in the long term. It also gives consumer choice on router.

I take it the second 'dynamic' password is needed to unlock the G2425G-B for voip from Sipgate etc.

Also, my G2425G-B (from Fibrus) makes a slight noise - a constant, high pitched sound, same on 2.4 or 5 GHz. You can only hear it when it's quiet but I have the router in my living room. Do they all do that?

Nokia G2425G-B

Based on Mediatek MT7528 'router-on-a-chip'; a MIPS32 architecture SoC clocked at 580MHz. See datasheet link below*:

The device has hidden menus. Accessed by logging-in through web interface (http://192.168.1.254) with:

u/name: AdminGPON
p/word: ALC#FGU

This opens up a new Maintenance menu. With config options that should allow its use with certain ISPs, though not yet BT Openreach FTTP.

Has a second 'dynamic' password which needs cracking; to gain root shell, to modify MfrID and YPSerialNum for Openreach.

billybollox@redhat:~$ ssh [email protected]
