Porting Number from TalkTalk to Fibrus

[link to this post]

Hi

I've just had Fibrus FTTP installed: the Fibrus salesman said that TalkTalk refuse to port landline numbers to Fibrus.

Is this likely to be the case?

(My TalkTalk service is via copper wires.)

I phoned TalkTalk about it but got India so it was a waste of time.

If you'd be happy to port your phone number to a third-party VOIP provider (like Sipgate) then it's easy:

1. Install your Fibrus line as a completely separate service - data only, no voice. Don't send any sort of cancellation notice to Talktalk.
2. Set up a VOIP provider account, and test it all works properly (it will come with a temporary phone number)
3. Get the VOIP provider to migrate your phone number from Talktalk (who can't refuse)
4. Once the number is migrated, it should automatically cease the Talktalk service, both data and voice. If it doesn't, then you can just cancel it.

Sounds like they simply can't be bothered....

A TalkTalk number can certainly be ported out, without issue. See the list of service providers that Sipgate for example can port in from.

I would recommend that you consider porting your number to a third-party VoIP provider so that if you ever move from Fibrus the voice service can just run 'over the top' of whatever broadband provider you have in future. Much like email or web hosting. Its just another service really.

The only thing you must remember is that if you port out the number from TalkTalk to any other provider (VOIP service or ISP) it automatically ceases the TalkTalk landline and broadband connection so do not port out the number until you are confident that your Fibrus connection meets your needs.

This forum is much older, and thankfully hasn't gone for gimmicks such as "kudo" or those crazy buttons. It is about the content here, broadband, not about the poster. smile
