FTTP - Openreach Ethernet point installs?

[link to this post]

During a FTTP install, is it still possible to ask/pay for openreach to run ethernet runs to different internal rooms of a house?

I'd like two rooms to have ethernet sockets and cables run going back to my study where the ONT will be installed.

Thanks!

Not really no. An electrician who installs data cabling, or a data / AV install company are usually your best bet if you can’t DIY it.

Thanks. Is this a recent change? As I read a few reports that customers were able to have 3 ethernet sockets installed around their houses at some point - though maybe this was just during the trial.

I have never heard of this and to do a good job of running ethernet round a house you really would need the time and planning done correctly and Openreach really wouldn't be the best choice for that as they have their hands full deploying FTTP.

A quick google search shows it was offered at some point in the past:

I'm guessing this was when FTTP was more of a trial and they wanted maximum speeds tested over wired connections.

No.

Openreach will not install any ethernet cables as part of your FTTP installation. If you want a home network creating then as suggested you'll need to pay an electrician or data network engineer to install this for you.

Openreach will install the ONT to a point of your choosing inside your property, within reason of course, they will then plug in your router to this and their job is done. Anything you want beyond this will be up to you to provide yourself.

Openreach do offer a 'premium' service for FTTP installs, but this is billed through your CP provider (i.e. talktalk).

However - This install only covers:
connect an optical network terminator (ONT) within 1m of the nearest 13amp power socket and – if needed - more than 10m and up to 30m from where the fibre enters the building.
Run more than 15m of external cable to reach the customer’s preferred fibre entry point

Essentially you're getting more flex in where your CSP goes (either interally or externally) and then greater flex on where the fibre goes once it lands at the splice point to the ONT.

Back in the day, (I’m going to say pre 2015 as a rough figure) you could have a ‘premium install’ that allowed for the installation of up to three ethernet cables from the router to rooms of the owners choice. These were always surface mounted along skirtings etc. Nobody ever wanted miles of cat5 run in this way.

As others suggest. If you are not going to run it yourself, then find a tradesman who will.
