FTTP proble,

[link to this post]

Been waiting ages to sign up with Lightspeed Broadband.
The 5 houses at the top of my road are all available to order their service but no one else can.
Rang them again today and got the following reply-

Just to clarify the customer is unable to be serviced due to to the area being all dig and joint poles. Is that correct? This area will not be available ?
Correct.

Anyone know what this means? They were only here 2 weeks ago digging up the pavements to install ducting.

Direct In Ground - the existing cable is buried, there is no duct.
Joint User Poles - owned by the power supplier and licensed to telecoms companies to attach cables. Not many have licences

Did you tell them when you rung that they had dug and installed ducting outside your property? if so what did they say to that?

Yeah i did mention that when i emailed them back, but strangely no reply!
Why would they need to dig everything up? as when Openreach put their fibre in earlier in the year from what i saw of it they just strung it from pole to pole?

So that sounds like they are to install duct between (possibly) existing boxes to allow fibre to be run.

They won’t necessarily use Openreach PIA-based access to their poles (and ducts…where they exist). Indeed it looks from the last update from bidb that they are laying their own stretch of ducting.

There’s nothing particular unusual there. Neither is it unusual for their sales teams to not be completely up to date with rollout minutiae - or have ANY clue whatsoever .of the build or it’s progress. They typically have very little real information or useful detail of that and only have the ability to tell when an order can be placed.

You just need to be patient and wait.

Couldnt wait any longer for Lightspeed so i upgraded to Sky's gigafast package as they gave me some good discounts!
Should it be up to full speed straight away or does it take time to settle in as this is nowhere near the max speed or is this likely to be as good as it gets.
Does distance have any impact on FTTP as it does on FTTC?

It will go up to full speed immediately: there is no settling time, nor is there any variation with distance.

Presumably you're using the router Sky provided? And I presume you're using a wired ethernet connection? (Although I would never expect to see 600Mbps from wifi unless it's very modern indeed) And you're sure you've not got any other downloads going on in the background, either on the same device or another device on your network?

Try at different times of day. If it's the same, then almost certainly the problem is with your endpoint. It can be quite hard to tune a consumer PC to transfer at a gigabit per second.

Assuming it's a PC, you can try turning off or uninstalling antivirus. Alternatively, boot from an Ubuntu live USB stick and do a test with that, just to prove it's a software problem.

To be honest though: in any normal use, you're never going to be able to tell the difference between 600M and 900M (the theoretical maximum being 942Mbps on a gigabit ethernet cable, once TCP/IP and ethernet headers are taken into account). So just enjoy. Plus, any unused bandwidth is still available to other devices in your household.

Thanks for the info, yeah using the sky router connected directly to the pc, the only other thing that is running is a cctv system, although the pc is about 5 years old.
Only time i get to test the speed is in the evening due to work.
Guess i should be happy coming from a long fttc line that was 22Mbps and couldnt stream 4K and would take hours to update the Xbox!
