Openreach or Jurassic fibre?

[link to this post]

Looks like I'm going to have to select between Openreach and Jurassic for fibre for FTTP. Jurassic are cheaper, faster, and have a rolling one month contract(they also get great reviews on Trustpilot). Openreach have many ISPs to choose from but are more expensive(for each speed offering), and have long contracts(compared to Jurassic).

So on balance Jurassic seem to be the better deal, are there any advantages to Openreach FTTP I should take into account that would swing my decision? Thanks in advance. smile

Do you have any specific usage or technical requirements?

Just typical residential use, but on the one hand I'm tied to Jurassic forever(?) once I have their fibre installed whereas with Openreach I have many more ISPs to choose from ... though it's worse value for money and typically has long term contracts.

No you're not. At any time in the future you can just place an order from an Openreach-based ISP, and they'll install an Openreach ONT for you at that time.

You'll then have two fibres, and two ONTs. You could even pay for service on both, if you want redundancy (apart from where JF and Openreach fibres share the same ducts)

Jurassic Fibre is CGNAT with no way around that unless you buy a static IP on a business service, and to rub salt into the wound they don't do IPv6 so everything you do is going to be double-NATed.

For me that sort of connection wouldn't be usable, but it depends what you're doing.

It's very frustrating to see brand new networks built without IPv6, especially when new entrants know they are going to have to do CGNAT.

Yes, if I wanted two ONTs I wouldn't be asking for an opinion on which provider was better ...

If you feel that strongly about it and you have made your mind up about never ever ever switching between the two infrastructure providers then a right decision today may be a wrong decision in a few year's time if one of them makes improvements on their network, so most people won't be able to give you a long-term opinion.

With most if not all theses Alt Nets , a question I would be asking is ( and probably not really answerable ) , what happens in the future….many of these Alt Nets will ‘fail’ , they may be taken over by a larger organisation, they may not …even if they continue as they are , what is their long term support structure likely to be , in a year or two , after the mad rush to build , and the majority of ‘staff’ are let go , as they are no longer required, what if your ‘fibre’ is damaged and you lose service ?, are they like to have the local expertise on hand to quickly resolve the issue , or would it be someone sent from miles away , to assess the issue , return to the office, plan the repair , potentially engaging a contractor to fix whatever the issue is etc…in other words what if it goes t*ts up ?
OR could fail , but arguably they are least likely network provider to do so , any ISP based on OR infrastructure is more likely not to be looking for alternatives should the network supplier they use no longer exist

Therefore only you can make the decision.

Was Eclipse Home Option 1, VM 2Mb & O2 Standard
Utility Warehouse (up to 16mbps) via Talk Talk, upgraded to fibre 40/10

Well then it's Openreach because you have the choice of multiple ISPs instead of being stuck with one and hoping they might wholesale in future.
