ONT in a different location to NTE5C

[link to this post]

Hi.

Apologies if I'm repeating a topic. I did a quick search but didn't manage to find anything relevant.

FTTP installation in my area is in the early stages, and I'm just thinking ahead to when I get connected. Right now there is no power socket anywhere near where the copper line enters the property to the NTE5C by my front door, and running both power and ethernet cables to it won't be an easy task.

How flexible are the installers when it comes to where they run the fibre and place the ONT? The most ideal solution would be for it to go upstairs, right above where the copper enters now. Failing that downstairs is fine but it would need to run a few extra meters to a different room. Either by running along my external wall or shifting where the dropwire hits the wall. That way it can go right where I already have power.

If not, I'll work on getting the extra cables put in ASAP. I just don't want to get to install day and have them say that it has to follow the old copper route, and there's no power there so tough luck.

Thanks.

It depends …. As long as the cable run to the preferred upstairs location is simple enough, then it ought to be fine.

By simple, the exterior wall on the same side as where the feed is ? No barriers to the cable being run out and straight down the external wall ?

We're talking Openreach FTTP, right?

You shouldn't have any problem with them running a few metres externally to the entry point that you want. I believe the limit is 15 metres externally and 10 metres internally for a standard install, see here. (You can pay extra for a premium installation, but this has to be ordered via your ISP in advance)

I'm not sure about having the ONT upstairs, because it will depend on the specifics around safety and access: somebody would have to be on a ladder for drilling the entry hole. Also the CSP will normally need to be at ground level for access, so if you're fed aerially, the fibre would go down to the CSP and then back up again. If you're fed from underground that's not an issue.

In short: they will be accommodating. They know that the ONT needs to be within 1m of a power point, so will help you select a suitable location.
