VOIP over fibre after using 4G data (sipgate UK)

[link to this post]

(UK/Devon) Hello, I’ve been using a 4G connection for my landline. Used to have an existing copper line but dropped the broadband and fixed phone as wasn’t getting a high volume of calls and the broadband was terrible. The connection is ok over 4G, phone works most of the time and has an automated voicemail for calls that drop or don’t connect. My question is, the lines (run by BT) are now being connected to full fibre to the premises. They run a ‘digital phone line’ service in some of the more expensive contracts but having already ported my local number to sipgate and using my own voip phones and I’m happy to stick with them. Is this possible over the fibre line? Will BT potentially block this kind of traffic if it’s not done ‘through them’ don’t want to sign up for fibre if if going to have no end of phone trouble Thanks in advance

Don't worry, it will all work fine. Your ISP will not (and is not permitted to) block the traffic to Sipgate. You are definitely best off keeping it this way, so that your voice is separate from your broadband.

Do also bear in mind that you don't have to buy your service from BT. The FTTP network is installed by Openreach, but BT is only one of many ISPs who sell services over it. Many of them will sell you a data-only FTTP broadband, without voice - which is perfect for you.

(And if you do end up taking a broadband with voice service, eg. from the likes of Sky or Vodafone, then you'll just get another phone number that you don't use)

HTH!
