Moved from Zen to Plusnet, full sync but capped at 70Mbps?

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I moved to Plusnet around a month ago now from Zen. Have always synced at the full 79999/20000 for the 5 years I've been at this address with Zen.

Ever since I've been connected to PN (same equipment, I simply changed the log in details on the router) I've only ever managed a maximum DL of 70Mbps, despite being connected at the full speeds.

I'm using an unlocked HG612 with an Asus RT-AC86U, wired connection, no recent changes to any hardware.

Spoken with PN and they can see nothing wrong with the connection, am provisioned correctly.

Have rebooted the modem a couple of times in the past month with no change, most recently just now.

Any thoughts what could be the cause? I know its only about a 5Mbps loss but its frustrating that there is no reason, that I can see, that I shouldn't still be getting the full speeds that I've been getting for the last 5 years!

Thoughts?

As you've seen, the line is still achieving the full sync speed (just).

What download test are you doing? You should try to multiple different sites. It's possibly related to the traffic paths between those sites and the Zen/Plusnet networks.

However, it's also possible that Plusnet are performing traffic shaping at the BRAS to cap your download speed, a.k.a. "IP Profile". This stops the DSLAM from dropping packets, but is also designed to improve your performance when using interactive traffic like gaming, ssh or VOIP at the same time as a large download is taking place. The result is that you'll see lower latency and jitter for the interactive traffic, so a better experience overall, at the expense of a slight reduction in the background download speed. Google "bufferbloat" for the full story, but roughly you can think of it as reserving a small amount of your bandwidth for the interactive traffic, so that it can queue-jump the big download.

On the whole I'd say: don't worry about it, and enjoy the service. Remember that there are many people who get much, much lower speeds on FTTC - but still pay the same as you!

You can see the IP Profile candlerb refers to in the additional diagnostics page of the BTW speedtest.

ps your BQM no longer works.

Sorry totally forgot to reply.

Tried many speed tests, and downloads all wired, all the same.

IP Profile is 74/20 according to speedtest.btwholesale.com.

Download Test
Download speed achieved during the test was 69.84 MbpsFor your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 40 - 74 Mbps
IP Profile for your line is 74 Mbps
Upload TestUpload speed achieved during the test was 18.82 Mbps
IP Profile for your line is 20 Mbps

I'm not super concerned, a bit annoyed as it it was perfectly fine with Zen, still pinging at 6-8ms just I was hitting 75Mbps every time.

Yes BQM is the old connection, I've not edited it yet.

Update, I'm back to full speed.

The culprit? Bearer 0 INPRein = 1.00. Capped the line and a few days later DLM turned it off (INPRein = 0.00) and now I have my full speed back.

Thank you to this thread, and those in it, especially @j0hn83: https://forums.thinkbroadband.com/general/f/4727548-...

...and thanks to PlusNet for refusing to do anything about it, when a DLM reset would likely fixed it. :/

That's one reason why Zen are more expensive than Plusnet, "..you pays your money, you takes your choice...."

You're welcome. It's a handy trick.

A DLM reset would likely have seen the line return to Retx High as that tends to be the default.

I can't see Zen having done any different to be honest. Providers are generally unwilling to try a DLM reset when you're above the minimum guarantee.
