Type of cable required

[link to this post]

Is there a specific type of cable I will be needing to connect from the Fiber Hereos Box that they place on my wall and then what do I need from that box to my router? I ask because I will need about approx 5-7m of cable as it is not possible to mount the box any nearer to my PC, is it or do they connect nearer to existing routers?

Many Thanks.

You would normally connect a router to this box with an ethernet cable and then your devices to the router.

These can be upto 100m long at 1Gbit.

The “channel” length in the standards is 100 metres in total for all Classes/Categories. By rights this should be consist of a “permanent link” of no more than 90 metres of solid-core cabling (the type you find in a 305m/1000 ft tote box) and 10 metres of “work area” cabling (stranded core) - to you and me and Joe Public - a patch lead!

Are both ends of the cable the same I guess that is what I am asking I know that the Ethernet goes into the router but what is on the other side of the cable?

The ISP would want to present something that is easily used so will 99% be an RJ45 ethernet presentation with a small chance it could be a GBIC which could then be converted to RJ45.

The box you are talking about generally has fibre in and ethernet out for ease of use.

The "box" is called an ont, a "converter" that translate light to electrical signals. These signals are presented as tcp/ip and in a physical form of ethernet.

You just need a standard 10 or 15m cat5e patch cable - and you can go wild with the colour - or choose black 😅.

Most routers are cable sensing so you don't need to worry about the transmit/receive issue smile

That used to be the case with 100M ethernet (MDI / MDI-X), but is not a thing with Gigabit Ethernet. All four pairs are used for transit and receive simultaneously.

However if one of the pins is broken, and it's not one of 1-2-3-6, then the connection may fall back to the old 100M (transmit on one pair, receive on the other)

This I understand smile So do I just need for example a 10 metre either side fitted with an ethernet connection?

Just a 10m RJ45 network patch lead. Like this.
