FTTC install - extentions

Parents getting ADSL to FTTC upgrade with Pulse8, engineer booked for managed install on the 29th. Current set up is from master socket downstairs they have a 10-12m RJ11 Cat 5 shielded twisted pair cable to the bedroom where the router is placed.

I know having extra cable can effect the speed (although not sure how much a 10-12m cable would), however according to the BT checker the line can handle 53mbps, and there going to be on the 38/10mbps service from Pulse8. So even if the extra cable does slightly effect speeds, they have some spare to play with.

So the question is will the engineer allow them to use this extension when he sets up the connection? And if not, would moving the router back upstairs after he has gone be an issue?

I know they can install their own extension kit, but seems abit of a faff running the cable, especially when there is already perfectly a good quality cable installed

Any reason why the modem router has to be in the bedroom?

Put there years ago. Mostly (and still applies today), there are 2 PCs upstairs which dont have wifi cards so are hardwired using ethernet. Plus more devices upstairs that use wifi so makes sense to have router as close as possible to them.

I know they could run an ethernet cable from downstairs to the PCs or buy wifi cards, but seems unnecessary messing around if the current solution will work on fttc

just re-crimp the cat 5e cable back to a rj45 and add a 5 port gigabit switch

Thats a good idea, didnt think of that. So if i have the router near the master socket, would you recommend a cat5 rj11 to rj11 cable from router to master socket? Or will any old rj11 cable do for such a short length

I did read the VDSL faceplate takes RJ45 so could get a rj11 to rj45 cable. Any benefit to that?

I'd try the standard rj11 that comes with the router and go from there. I'm not sure how far you are from your parents and how much travelling is required, if thats an issue, go for cat5e based rj11 even for a short run,it probably make zero difference but at least you are crossing off issues.

If you’re running Ethernet over the Cat5e cable link you’ll need all 4 pairs of the Cat5e cable (for a Gigabit capable connection between the modem and your own gear)…so you’ll need to be using an RJ45 plug (or indeed socket if terminating on a jack in a faceplate - the better way) at both ends of the cable - fully terminating all 8 wires / 4 pairs in the cable, rather than an RJ11 which is strictly for voice applications.

Ah ok thanks. When the engineer has gone i might test the router in the bedroom then with the existing RJ11 extension, see if i get any noticeable speed decreases. If not it seems an easier solution to start with
