Different speeds from different providers

[link to this post]

Hi

I have been with Virgin Media fibre for years, and had no issues. Before the fibre rollout, I used Zen back in the late 90s!, A&A, etc.

However, I am about to move and was checking what ISP to go to as there is no Virgin, but I am finding different speeds from different providers, even though most are with Openreach.

So OpenReach search says I can get 300mb+ with GFast broadband, also Ultra Fast Broadband 80mb. 1000 GB is not yet available.

When I use the various broadband search engines like switch etc, only Shell comes back with 300mb. Sky has 150mb. A company called Trooli says I can get 900 MB!

I called Zen and A&A, who said they are Openreach and can only provide 60 MB. Zen said Gfast was an old technology?? which they don't use anymore and were only fibre to cabinet.

I am just wondering how this works these days and if this is normal. Is Sky, Shell, Trooli just don't being honest with their speeds?

Thanks

I reckon not everyone sells gfast , so offer normal FTTC.

Trooli are a completely separate FTTP company and would be your best bet for now I reckon.

Trooli would be my pick, not many ISPs are willing to sell G.fast so you tend to pay a premium for it, and it's also a nightmare if your line quality is borderline.

Trooli will be FTTP and you'll get to decide where the cable enters your house as part of the installation.

The BT Wholesale checker will show the downstream and upstream sync maximum and minimum rate for VDSL and G.fast.

ISPs will base any guarantee on the minimum rates, and also allow for protocol overheads, so they are not *advertising* more than you would achieve, although typically the peformance is better.

ISPs do not necessarily offer packages based on all of the available Openreach products. For example Zen have decided not to bother selling SOGfast or SOADSL as it would be an insignificant volume of sales compared with SOGEA and FTTP.

From your figures it appears Shell are prepared to offer a SOGfast based on the Openreach 330/50 product, whereas Sky are only prepared to offer it based on the 160/30 product.

There will be some small variation on line sync rates for a particular technology, but this is only dependent on the modem chipset and firmware, not the ISP.
