IDNET FTTP Config

I propose to upgrade to IDNET FTTP in the near future. I'm running a Draytek Vigor 2862n with a WAN1 ADSL2+ connection which I will keep. What are the basic parameters I need to set up to establish a WAN2 FTTP connection to IDNET. I'm pretty sure the FTTP connection to the house will be from BT/Openreach as they have already installed the fibre to the front of the house. I have a 1Gb/s LAN cable from where the ONT will go to the 2862n which I've tested.

An ethernet cable from the Draytek to the Openreach ONT once it is active on your wall. IDNet will then provide any PPPoE username/password required to connect.

IDnet offer 150 Mbps, 300 Mbps, and Gigabit (900 Mbps) services.

Your Draytek may struggle with anything faster than the 300 Mbps service as there is a firewall limit at 400 Mbps, but the Draytek website does not identify the maximum PPPoE throughput the unit can handle. Many home/domestic type routers end up being a limitation on speed when you are offered more then 200 Mbps.

Thanks for the configuration information and update on throughput. I don't intend to go to FTTP for higher throughput, but because I know that at sometime I will have to. My plan is once I've got a stable FTTP connection and associated things like email sorted, I plan to replace the 2862n as I know it is no longer supported.

I suggest moving email and other services (e.g. web) to ISP independent offerings, such as Proton Mail, MS 365, or Google Workspace. Those providers don't care whom your ISP is, so you can move around without having to update things. The Draytek is likely only to be an issue if you want higher speeds.

You get a Router with your selected IDNet service if you choose a 24mth service?
IDNet 24mth reverts to monthly price on month 25 - by then I won't need 550/550 and will probably drop to 160/160 assuming I haven't found somewhere nice to retire to that is on dial up.

If you do join IDNet through check the prices first BT/OR are dearer, especially if City Fibre are about or will be.

I can't fault IDNet or City Fibre - raised a fault on a Sunday at 11am, by 2.30pm the fault was fixed. It was Network cable fault.

I selected IDNET after a lot of research and they came out as having a very good reputation, I selected Draytek many, many years ago for similar reasons. The communication I've had recently with both companies reinforces this view; they've both been very helpful. I only mentioned BT/OR since I've checked CityFibre and its not in my region and I watched OR engineers install fibre to the front of my house (for a very complicated set of reasons concerning way-leaves). I've also checked the spec of the 2862n and the firewall throughput limitation would be a problem if I wanted to go to >400Mb/s, but at the moment I don't (but that was a useful piece of info). Also the 2862n WAN2 is 1Gb/s. My intention is to upgrade to a 2865 or other at a later date when the firewall limitation would also be removed if I wanted to max out the connection. As to staying with Draytek I've had good interaction with their support and I understand how their routers are configured (mostly) and it's "Better the Devil you know than you don't know"

Draytek's are good products, but whilst it has an Ethernet connection that can connect a 1Gb/s, there are two other things to think about:

* CPU capabilities for PPPoE (as you're looking at the Openreach network, PPPoE is likely involved)
* CPU capability for Firewall - draytek publish this as 400 Mbit/s.

If you push the CPU to its max, you could find odd effects.
