Mini UPS for Gigaclear ONT

[link to this post]

Looking for recommendations for a mini ups to power my Gigaclear ONT.

Power required is 5V 2A, but my Eaton 3S Mini that was powering my old router only goes down to 9V.

I could get a bigger unit, but as it is now just the ONT in that room (router & other kit all in a cabinet in the garage with a UPS) I was hoping for something smaller.

Long term plan is to move the ONT into the garage, but there is some external work needed before that happens and it's not the highest priority!

I would either;

a) use the Eaton with a 12V to 5V power supply.

b) find a USB power bank that can cope with simultaneous charge and discharge (unfortunately most can't, or at the very least their instructions strongly recommend against it).

Why bother with a UPS for the ONT? What other equipment do you have that uses the internet connection and will work in a power cut?

far better to have a mifi unit if you need internet access during a down period ...

Get a PoE injector for the cabinet end where everything is on the big UPS, put a PoE splitter that can do 5v at the ONT end:

I'm not sure that is true - you are making the assumption that a UPS will have a shorter runtime than the backup power at the mobile base station.

For me, it's three-fold:

1) My UPS (230v output) powers router, VDSL modem (sadly no fibre here yet), Home Assistant, couple of switches and the CCTV PoE and NVR. This means that I get uninterrupted security monitoring of the house during a power cut, at least for as long as the batteries hold out
2) Most power cuts (round here, anyway) are less than 10 minutes long, so I don't get any service interruption for a normal power cut. Nothing reboots, so nothing has to start up cleanly. Much neater than having a home router crash back into life after a 2 second glitch. Also, I get notified that the power has gone out which is useful in knowing that I need to head home and take precautions against things like a defrosting freezer.
3) The exchange has backup diesel so should run uninterrupted for far longer than my own UPS will (around 45 mins).

Since I put this UPS in, I've had a few power cuts but none have gone deeper than 50% of the UPS battery before restoring power. Definitely a very worthwhile investment and *definitely* worth using with the ONT / VDSL modem to protect the internet connection, at least for me.

Similar to what daern has said, UPS in my cabinet supports router, POE switch and other kit.VoIP phones are PoE.
Desktop PC is on another UPS
If we have a power outage less than 30 mins then there is no interuption to service and no rebooting of network kit

When storm Eunice struck in 2022, we had a 6 hour power outage and lost all mobile phone services after around half an hour. At that point I still had at least 40 mins left before my UPS shut down.

My mini DC UPS powers my router and ONT for around 4 hrs.
I could at least plug my laptop in for access in an emergency.

I can see that makes sense for your short power cuts.

Most power cuts I experience last for several hours. We had one that was fixed after 47 hours. If it had lasted an hour longer I would have got financial compensation. Fortunately I was away on holiday for much of the time.
