Does this FTTP installation look 'normal'

[link to this post]

Hi,

I recently had FTTP installed by Quickline, and wondered if the way they have done is what should be expected.

I'm surprised by the large loop of fibre which looks quite unsightly and not something I've seen before, but am unsure whether there's a specific reason it has been done like this?

I would guess the large loop is to return it to the lower level without putting a sharp kink in the fibre. It does look odd but can sort of see why they might have done it - I suspect there would have been better ways to plan it but they probably just wanted to do a quick job and that was the fastest way to do it.

I wouldn't have that. Shoddy job.

Better Times!

It may be normal for the company that installed it , but is pretty ‘ugly’ and personally I would not be happy with that level of finish, even if it’s only aesthetics and won’t affect performance…don’t they have cappings/covers etc to make a neat and tidy job and why the huge gap between where the external cable enters their version of a CSP , the obvious thing to do would be to put their ‘CSP’ where the cable appears from underground then that completely unnecessary visible cable ‘loop’ wouldn’t be needed .

I was thinking the same thing, put the CSP at the head of the duct, problem solved as ugly loop not required.

Going off the installs I've managed, it's a bit of a p-take. My first thought is that they just couldn't (be bothered to) re-terminate the fibre.

The conduit should've been cut much shorter, a couple of bricks' height would be enough. When the fibre's not covered, the conduit is generally left protruding to protect the cable from kicks or running the lawn mower into it, etc. It should also be bracketed to the wall, especially at that length.

With the conduit a bit shorter they'd have also been able to follow the current line along the mortar, without the need for that ridiculous loop.

I'd send the info to Quickline, tell them you're not happy and see what they've got to say about it.

Thanks for all your feedback. I was thinking that I was being 'fussy' not wanting a large loop of cable at the front of my house.

I will get in touch with the company to see if it can be tweaked. I'll also probably mention the mess they made of my lawn channelling the cable to the house.

I can see why the CSP isn't at the top of the duct because that would put it underneath what looks like a bay window, but ideally the duct would have just been run to a more appropriate location. There's no need for that much exposed orange duct or the weird loop though.
